Maynard touches on Tool at Manhunter screening

A story from the Facebook Tool Army group in regards to the recent Manhunter Screening with Maynard:

So I saw “Manhunter” last night followed by an interview / Q&A with Maynard. He mostly talked about the film specifically, but did talk about his various music projects including Tool briefly, but only when someone would ask a specific question. No new information other than him seeming increasingly frustrated with the slow process of making the new Tool album. When someone asked if Tool would consider making a concert video similar to Floyds “The Wall” he answered with “Well, if we could maybe finish the new album first then…yeah, we would consider it.” Also with regards to the new album, he asked the audience “Do I seem like a lazy person? Than stop blaming me.”

He gave some fascinating insights into his music making process and how it relates to the visuals in his live performances. Basically summarized – he pays a lot of attention to the pacing of things, not giving away too much too soon. He really lets Adam run the show when it comes to the music (something we already knew) and comes in after they have things composed to lay down vocals. He unabashedly called Adam a “control freak” when it comes to the process.

People asked a lot of questions about his favorite films and things like that. “Manhunter” was his first choice for the screening and is one of his favorites. He mentioned “The Exorcist”, as well as film I’ve never heard of called “Bliss,” and “Wings of Desire” among his favorites.
The interview was pretty cool, but from a Tool fans perspective there wasn’t a whole lot of new information. I enjoyed the show and was glad I was there to see the man in person.

I expect the quotes there are paraphrased, so don’t take them verbatim. Not entirely sure why he was answering Tool questions on the night (though I guess it’s kinda inevitable that he was asked). I doesn’t really add anything new to the equation, though it certainly appears that optomism regarding Maynard having started his part on the album are unfounded for now. I think it’s pretty safe to put a line through a 2014 release date at this point in time.

I didn’t even know this movie existed until I heard about this. Saw it last week, pretty good. Apparently I have no clue how many Lecter movies have been made.

Don’t forget Hannibal Rising which I thought was also actually pretty good…

I wonder if anybody asked Maynard his thoughts on the T.V. series?

Obviously cannot get subtle parts of a conversation from the written word, I wonder in regards to the “do I look lazy…stop blaming me..” bit was there any joking or is this something he and adam/band have joked or worked through tension wise. Or is the beginning of internal issues bubbling through to the public. Would hate to see them end up like floyd, bitter and full of hate and blame for each other.

True. I would agree with that. It does just come across as more harsh/blunt than usual. Although I guess I get frustrated with the wife and kid sometimes doesn’t mean the whole thing is a disaster it just naturally happens I suppose with any long term/close relationships.

I’ve been having conversations lately pertaining to the “scene” and what’s happening to rock and it really is time for TOOL to pull their heads out of their asses and get this done (less Maynard of course). 8 years is a long fucking time to not have an album especially when you consider the talent… Anyways, my band decided to take a field trip to Ace of Spades Sacramento (25 min drive for us). This was Saturday 05/03/14 and the show consisted of about 6 local bands to include an “upcoming” band Fallrise… Had it not been for the fact… Read more »

Triptykon has a new album out that is good. And a band called cult leader appears to sound good. Haven’t heard it all though yet. Probably getting off topic though on my part.

I wrote the “review” above on facebook. All the quotes are paraphrased, and Maynard was speaking very loosely and half joking when calling Adam a control freak, but you could tell there was some truth in it. He DID sound sincere when he said the bit about NOT being lazy, and “stop blaming him.” That quote was the one thing he said that really stood out to me, and he said it the way I wrote it. But again, it was said in a way that had some humor in it. It did NOT seem like there was any tension… Read more »

Maynard has expressed his frustrations before so this isn’t really news to anyone, but it’s still of interest to me. I’m not sure why. He’s said things along these lines before but on the other hand he’s also said (this is almost verbatim but I’m not going to find the interview to make sure) “…But that’s their process, and you have to let them do their thing.” Maybe people are going to be frustrated with Adam Jones now, who in the VIP Q&A recording basically said, “Some painters take months to study their subject, experiment with different materials and ideas,… Read more »

I agree with Zwerewolf 100%! Music needs a Savior and it needs it now!! I feel sorry for any young rocker growing up with this shit music. We need a great big rock ‘n’ roll enema across the world and there will be nooo foreplay, just pure honest art coursing through every orifice!!

“Superior to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS”

– Entermainment Weekly

When I see a film advertised with a blurb saying it’s better than a similar film, it usually means the film is not very good. This seems to be an exception to that rule. Admittedly I haven’t actually seen the film, but I’ve heard it’s very good.

It’s older than Silence of the Lambs, if that makes a difference.
