A Perfect Circle to tour in May 2017

According to a number of sources, Billy Howerdel and Maynard James Keenan confirmed at last nights Q&A that A Perfect Circle will be touring in 2017, with a show announced for the 7th of May at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

There’s not much other detail at this stage, but word is it will be a decent sized tour and that new material has been worked on.  More details to come soon I expect!

New album?

I expect this means one, maybe two new By and Down tracks at best.

I get the sense that Billy has wanted to do a new APC record for years now. If maynard had any interest in such a project, we’d already have it.

APC, that sound… it hasn’t aged particularly well in my opinion. The Mer De noms/13th Step ‘sound’ feels like it fitted in ok at that end of the 90’s/early 2000’s, but it just feels dated now… in a not so good way. It makes me think that them recording a new album may be similar to the feeling I got from Soundgarden’s ‘King Animal’. That felt uninspired and unnecessary to me, they had that real golden era of Badmotorfinger, followed by Superunknown and took that sound as far as it could go by the Down on the upside album. Who… Read more »

I don’t necessarily disagree, but they are a great live band and I would certainly be excited to see them again. By and Down didn’t do much for me and I felt a bit disappointed when they closed with the last couple times I saw them. My wife is a huge fan and she’s not had the opportunity to see them before. She had never seen Tool or Puscifer either and over the past two years she’s gotten to experience Tool four times and Puscifer three times. I’m optimistic about how a new APC album might sound andbthe news of… Read more »

I can’t sit around and listen to APC anymore because they do kinda sound dated, BUT I agree they are excellent live. For whatever reason in concert, Maynard always sings better in other bands not called Tool.

I don’t feel 13th Step has dated at all. Fantastic song Writing.
A more mature album than Mer De Noms.

Mer De Noms hasn’t dated. However I do feel that its production is making it sound dated. A remaster would most definitely breath new life into it.

I would be happy with a new APC album. Means it would fill in the gap until new Tool.

I still love listening to the first and second albums and don’t feel that they sound dated.

Everything after 13th Step to me was no good though with the exception of “Passive”. “By and Down”… cringe worthy.

Hopefully Billy has been working on stuff in his off time and maybe we’ll get a decent album out of this wait.

Of course, Maynard did say that they probably wouldn’t do another album as singles are the way to go now days.

I guess the production “sound” of the first album seems dated to me, but those first 2 albums are still good.

Are you talking about composition or the actual engineering and recordings?

I enjoyed all of the above but I hear ya. Some people just have a different ear.

Billy Howerdel WINS!….he should understand that Tool had MJK first; I’ve often read how Billy doesn’t like that APC gets a back-seat sometimes, oh boo hoo we’re famous!

Strange. I’ve never come across anything like that. Can you cite a source? Billy has always more than humble in my opinion.

HUH? Where did you hear that? What are you talking about? Yes please, cite some sources.

There’s no sources because it’s bullshit. Billy knows where his bread is buttered, I’m sure he has probably had internal thoughts about wishing APC could have done a proper follow up from 13th Step, but he sure wouldn’t make any statements in the media about being pissed off or resenting it.
He knows that without Maynard he wouldn’t have made a cool few million dollars and that he would most likely still be sitting on the side of the stage as Tool’s guitar tech which is how he started out.

Speaking of APC … Does anyone else feel that Paul’s band Lesser Key sounds a lot like APC?

I like Lesser Key, just wish it was a full album instead of an EP. I guess that’s how Tool got started too … with an EP.

Hopefully, Tool’s next album will be an EP. (ha ha ha!)

I’d say if you HAD to make a comparison that Lesser Key sounds more like Ashes Divide than APC. Speaking of Lesser Key, I think it’s interesting that Paul left TOOL because he was “a bassist that wanted to be a guitarist” (according to Adam) and is playing bass for Lesser Key. (must not be a very good guitarist) I think APC’s next release will be an EP at best. Maybe even just a bunch of unrelated singles that are old material Billy has been sitting on for years. I only think this because Maynard has said singles and EP’s… Read more »

I MUCH prefer the “original” version of “Passive” which was commonly referred to as “Vacant.”

They used to play it back in the early 2000s and when I heard it first at the International Ballroom I was blown away. MJK mentioned it being a rumor and/or it being a leftover from the infamous Tapeworm project (RIP).

It was a much (better) heavier/angrier version of Vacant and it kicked ass.

For my money both “Thirteenth Step” and “10,000 Days” will age / have aged terribly. Both victims of the loudness wars. Christ look at the waveforms, brickwalled all to hell. Who told these guys to make it sound good for earbuds?

I think Wings Part 1&2 and Rosetta Stoned are timeless. The Pot has never been a favorite though. The last four or five shows I’ve seen, Vicarious was left off the set list and I actually missed hearing it.
