The April 2017 Tool newsletter is out, and it pretty much reinforced the previous post where Danny hoses down album speculation:
WTF!!!
Are you serious? How in the world could anyone – even the most desperate Tool enthusiast make such an incredible leap? I’ve received email over the years from people who have included a 20 page treatise on the true meaning behind “Lateralus†when the song tracks are re-arranged to their “secret†correct order and synched up to some obscure film, and I think: Hmm, who knows? But the idea about my mentioning a strange happening at Arby’s being a cryptic hint of “colossal Tool news†really had me scratching my head. (NOTE: For any one who is interested, I’ve copied my original post that was inserted as an update into the September 2016 newsletter. Check out the last sentence!)
So there we go. Â There’s a moral here somewhere!
There’s not much else happening in the newsletter, so my advice for the easily Blair triggered – don’t read it!
Well, its too easy to blame the fans that this has been so miscommunicated. You are a complete dick if you ignore that. We have been misinformed about toolshit for more then 10 years now…
This band, and the way how they handle this, is a joke.
Not convinced it’s a miscommunication thing, anyone trying to link together snippets in Blair’s emails with random Instagram photos and arriving to the conclusion that an album is done, is really clutching at straws.
Has anyone ever “reverse engineered” BMB’s newsletters AFTER Lateralus or TTDays? Like if we were to scour the old newsletters in the months prior to previous releases would we now see hints and secrets about the albums? Just curious, it would be interesting to see. It might help us, to know what to look for when the time is getting near. Unless BMB has always been full of it. ha ha! Seriously though, I’d like to meet him as much as Mr. Keenan.
I’ve read a few of the ones in the lead up to 10K Days after it’s released, and they’re generally pretty accurate. I don’t feel like there has been the same level of “hints” dropped on their latest work though.
Definitely can’t blame Blair for the lack of news. I guess my only issue with his newsletters is that he’s just a terrible writer. At times, he writes as though he thinks people care about him or like he’s some sorta celebrity. Again, can’t blame him for lack of tool news. But perhaps no updates until there’s something to wrote about would be the preferred outcome for the fans.
Write*
Someone is getting coal in there stocking this year.
Does anyone believe that lateralus and 10000 days can be rearranged to create some hidden song? Or that there is a secret track called “problem 8”? Its a serious question. Tool is my favorite band. Its helped me through a lot of tough times in my life. Its great music. Its like jazz, you can sit there and break it down to its core and rebuild and be inspired by the writing. The lyrics are just vague enough so that you can imply your own journey onto it. And the music set behind it elicits emotions so well that its… Read more »
Bullshit. Nobody is claiming here… Its very simple;
I like Tools music. I like getting new Tool music even better.
I like when they are communicating that new stuff is coming.
Nobody likes to wait, especially if you wait on that stuff what you like.
Nobody likes delays. It’s very human to feel frustrated of the thing that you like, they tell you is coming, and coming, and coming, but nothing is shown. Sorry for being human.
As for the serious question…its utter bollocks.
I think you’ve hit a few rather large nails in the head though.
If people are checking the website every 5 mins for news than clearly you’ve got too much time on your hands. What I don’t get is these letters have been like this for years and people still complain about there ambiguity.
Just think only another 12 (approx) newsletters…it will fly past
This is pretty hilarious though.
People read too much into this band.
All an elaborate way to explain what I essentially said in my first post. Some of you are dumb as bricks.
But be sure to continue to financially support them.
(Its called ‘enabling” BTW)
“Enable” them to continue to do what bands do? Ok
‘Bands’ release ‘albums’.
The also play live?
And tour ‘new material’.
Last time I checked they are playing material off their last album…
Jimi Hendrix releases more new material than Tool. On a regular basis.
Give it a rest man. Nobody gives a shit about your stale opinion.
Haha thats a good one! And true. At the Drive In released an excellent album today 17 years after their last. But they have done stuff inbetween…
oops my reply was for Rollins!
Excellent example. Omar RodrÃguez-López Cedric Bixler-Zavala are on 3 albums together, release 6 albums together as The Mars Volta, Omar RodrÃguez-López (the main creator) releases 51 solo albums, 6 more as main collaborator, 11 more under different 5 different band names, 17 guest appearances. Omar RodrÃguez-López : A Manual Dexterity: Soundtrack Volume One (2004) Omar Rodriguez (2005) Se Dice Bisonte, No Bùfalo (2007) The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange (2007; as Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quintet) Calibration (2007) Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus (2008) Minor Cuts and Scrapes in the Bushes Ahead (2008) Old Money (2008) Megaritual (2009) Despair (2009)… Read more »
Thanks for that manorwardude, I understand your point.
Personally though, I prefer apples but not so much of a fan of oranges
What’s your point mate? I don’t think pooping out everything you write is necessarily a superior position as an artist. Omar’s stuff (not that I’ve heard all of his work) is very hit and miss ; this tends to apply to most artists this prolific i.e. Zappa, Townsend, Patton and what not. Their output’s quality is almost never evenly distributed. I honestly don’t even care that Tool only have a couple of albums or that they’re so late with the current one ; if the artist doesn’t feel it what makes you think you’ll like it more? People would just… Read more »
MY point was this.
Of course not. But the point is one poster defended Tool because “At The Drive In had a 17 year break between releasesâ€, and HB said Tool are “still playing music from their most recent albumâ€. So does Led Zeppelin.
To defend Adam Jones having zero output in 11 years Tools defenders chose to compare him with a man who’s had 67 releases of new material. I’m just pointing out that mathematically there’s a slight difference between 67 and zero.
And comparisons between Zappa and especially Devin Townsend are horrific examples.
You’re grasping at straws really ; there is absolutely no sense in making such mathematical comparisons between two artists. You seem to define Adam Jones as this unidimensional person who’s sole purpose is to please your nipples until they explode with delight, all of this based on the fact that he had 0 musical (key word here) outputs since 10k. How do you know he hasn’t done some fine pottery over the years? Bottom line is, bands do whatever they want and when they want it : to claim otherwise would be a delusional misunderstanding of what this business is,… Read more »
The new At the drive-in album does kick some serious ass.
It’s ok, not more than a 7/10 though in my opinion
Omar RodrÃguez-López has actually been the bandleader and pretty much sole composer for 74 albums under his own and multiple band names including The Mars Volta since At The Drive In”s last.
beware. pointing out that Omar is far more prolific then adam is frowned upon in t00l circles……that crystal fairy album is super crunchy and fun.
Thanks,- it was just OF ALL EXAMPLES…..
Far better one would have been System Of A Down. But they haven’t claimed to be an active, functioning band touring constantly to support their opulent lifestyles while claiming to work on a new album for 11 years.
I don’ really buy into the 11 years claim nonsense tbh.
I like system, but live they have a tendency to be sloppy live. similar to deftones…. when theyre on, they totally destroy, but when they have an off night. it doesn’t sound so hot.
both bands rarely do the same thing live..and theyre a lot of fun…. unlike other bands who just phone it in. and use the same visuals from 90’s.
I don’t mind SOAD, but every time I’ve seen them they’re been average at best. Just not a great live band in my opinion.
i’ve been to a few of the souls benefit shows they’ve done in LA. again… sometimes system sound real messy. and when they first reunited i went to the forum a few years back and they were amazing. they didn’t rely on props and the GA floor was this seething mass of energy.
Not so much frowned on, just more like hearing from Captain Obvious.
Other artists release more music than Tool! Wow I’m shocked and amazed!
that’s great for him, but are people really listening to all this music? That’s an insane amount of output.
Of course not. But the point is one poster defended Tool because “At The Drive In had a 17 year break between releases”, and HB said Tool are “still playing music from their most recent album”. So does Led Zeppelin.
And please HB and other posters, don’t provoke another connect the dots/see Dick run level lesson in elementary logic.
Provoke a what now?
I don’t really care that there is no album coming soon. I just get seriously tired of the ambiguity. Just start these stupid things, or end them, with “Nothing to report.” That’s all that’s needed here. Also, adding to the frustration is that their web presence is such an embarrassing failure. Their websites are terrible and any options for community have been gone for years. Their webstore is barely passable. They have become better at the social media thing but barely. The lack of any real benefit for subscribing to ToolArmy is another thing that’s been complained about ad nauseum.… Read more »
My only complaint is that they dont come to Europe… So we cant even go to their shows…
Yup!
As a fan from Europe there’s just nothing to be excited about for so many years now. The band is dead, that’s what it is.
So after another 5 years of cargo cult speculation and navel gazing on Fourtheye, Danny says the exact same thing he said in 2012,- “Plan is to begin in the studio in the fall”. Here’s to another 5 years…..
Here’s to another 5 years of people like you repeatedly bringing it up. The rest of us have moved on…
‘Moved on’ Yep. By the way, the post we’re commenting on is this one; WTF!!! The very definition of having moved on, isn’t?
Moved on from wondering why Tool haven’t released an album yet, which is the point you seem to be determined to make, like somehow the 5 year old revelation you made a few days ago is some kind of shock to all of us.
Have we moved on from waiting for an album? Of course not. We’ve moved on from the bullshit and negativity that a small number of people like yourself keep playing like a broken record.
I think we all need to stop feeding the troll
Anyone else not digging the new mastodon? Same songs as last album except for like 2 or 3. They are in full on tool territory like, I’ve heard that riff or drum fill or vocal line/harmony before in a superior mastodon song. This retread shit drives me nuts. They’ve been stuck since the hunter. Do something new for fucks sake and stop letting the drummer sing. I had such high hopes for this one.
I’m sure there’s plenty that don’t dig it. Many have been disgruntled with Mastodon’s work for some time, and the new album doesn’t deviate from that path at all. While I also prefer older Mastodon, I thought this album was pretty good. No classic by any means, but has plenty of strong tracks on it. In fact the closer “Jaguar God” is probably my favorite song of 2017 so far, and harks back to the Mastodon of old. If I had to write my top 10 of 2017 right now, it’d probably sneak in, though I’d probably give it around… Read more »
Agreed that jaguar god is the best thing they’ve done in awhile. I’d love more in that direction. I like track 1, sultans curse as well. But the rest are more of the same. I thought bringing Brendan Obrien back was a good move but I can’t even hear his touch on it.
@ L-Hol _ This is only one of this Trolls frequent stops. Same criticism, same insulting behavior to anyone that is still a Tool fan and most certainly a desire to try and prove his musical knowledge is beyond approach. Yawn…tiresome.
On a separate note….29 days until to Detroit!
No, only site I’ve ever commented on. Had to actually ask a friend what a troll was. Since I only serve to please myself, my taste in music is certainly not beyond reproach. Manowar, Dead, Phish, WSP, Sonic Youth, Motorpsycho,Jean Luc Ponty, Mahavishnu Orchestra, love it all.
BTW,- like new Mastodon. Check out Motorpsycho if you haven’t heard them.
> Had to actually ask a friend what a troll was
Now I know you’re just trolling…
I think he’s not only trolling, but lying as well. I doubt he has a friend
WOW… this thread got out of hand…
Besides all this bullshit:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANNY!
One of the most creative drummers of our time – that’s for sure!
The comparison between how many albums bands put out is pointless. It’s quality over quantity every single time. When it comes to comparing Omar’s work to TOOL’s, you can really only say that THE MARS VOLTA is in the same league as TOOL. Even though I enjoy most of what Omar does with his solo projects, and really love AT THE DRIVE-IN, as well as DE FACTO, those projects are not comparable to TOOL, in my opinion.THE MARS VOLTA is, on the other hand. So if you were to compare THE MARS VOLTA albums to TOOL they are actually very… Read more »
You need to stop making so much sense. Your logic is not appreciated in this complaint session…
j/k 🙂
Well said…
I just hope Tool haven’t been trying too hard to out-do themselves. This might end up hurting them.
Besides, they are well versed in the putting out excellent content, so we’ll have to see.
i tend to think the volta is far beyond anything in the tool canon. to each their own, and art is always subjective. and it’s not a quantity over quality thing. but i put Omar and Cedric up there with King Buzzo and the melvins. there’s a shit ton of material and it can be daunting to new fans. but also rewarding if you seek/search it out.
Hellboi, I remember asking maybe 6 or 8 months ago if you could try and code in a function where if a user has visited a thread like this once, and then they return again it could be possible to have something like a ‘new’ title in red or something on posts that have occurred since the last time that browser viewed the thread.
All we can do is try and remember the amount of replies listed, and then if it changes we have to scroll down through them all, looking for the most recent date…
To be fair if we could stop with all the tiresome “Tool are lazy” style arguments that would help a fair bit…
