New Tool album now scheduled for May-July

Maynard has this morning posted a more detailed update for us in Twitter, outlining some of the reasons why, and a ballpark release window for the new Tool album launch:

The most interesting point this raises for me is that what will happen on the coming US and European shows? Will we see new material? Will they just be greatest hits shows in the same mold as the last few tours? I’d always go to a Tool show if they were to swing past town, but if I were attending one of the US shows in May, I’d be a little disappointed to get the same show we’ve been seeing for the last six years again.

The mention of video is also intriguing, as typically videos have come out some time after the release of the album. Perhaps they are planning to launch with a video already the bag for their next album? Or perhaps details are being finalised to finally see that Opiate video.

I highly doubt the album will come until late June or July. And they certainly won’t play any new material at those shows. A: Because they are Tool and just won’t. B: Why would they want terrible fan filmed videos of new unheard songs permeating the internet. C: They can’t be bothered rehearsing the new songs yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that the video for the first single will just be the Opiate video re-edited to fit a new song. Fans can expected the same set list with one slightly obscure old song inserted to misdirect the audience into… Read more »

Although this means a possible delay. I very happy that it seems to be a formal announcement. This is all I have been waiting for. Hopefully an official announcement wont be too far away.

I’d be very disappointed with no new song in Chicago. Couldn’t we expect or hope for at least a single by that time which they would play. And obviously they have been together with evil joe, you have to assume they are rehearsing and working out other things such as titles, publicity and what not.

No way it takes this long to mix a record! I think all MJK is saying is look how long and drawn out this process unnecessarily is and how frustrated he is with it all.

It’s odd that Joe would still be mixing at this point since so many people have heard the record ; who would invite close entourage to a listening party if the songs aren’t properly mixed and mastered.

Oh well, whatever floats their boat.

Also, the Opiate video seems like a strange investment, unless it somehow ends up on the album.

Tbh it’s pretty standard to have a ‘rough mix’ where say, you have all the basic levels dialled in so it’s listenable… you “get the picture”. Finer stuff like mix automation, balancing of eq / compression takes much longer. and mastering comes after all that.

Not at all surprised they’d have working copies of the mixes as they progress, so band members can listen on their home systems to reference etc…

My wild speculation is that a significant instrumental track (not a segue or intro) was finished/tracked after Maynard recorded his vocals. This could have delayed the mixing process a bit. It also would explain why Maynard did not know if the tracking process was comple well after he had finished tracking his vocals.

“same show we’ve been seeing for the last six years again.” Be fair, its been the same for 4 years tops. 2013 & 2014 had hooker, vicarious, intension, pushit, lateralus, B’boom . 2016 & 2017 had No Quarter, The Grudge, Parabola, Opiate-extended, sweat. That’s quite different. Every band keeps in some greatest hits. Believe it or not, most people at the shows are seeing them for their first or 2nd time and want to see hits like stinkfist or schism. Tool revealed new songs from Aenima live in 1995 before it was released. So its possible. But in the era… Read more »

Over these years they have also played Ticks and Leeches, Eulogy, Sober, I believe they played Intolerance and Flood and possibly Rosetta maybe around 2009/2010. They have changed things up, but like you said there will always be a large portion of the crowd that are seeing them for the first time and would be bummed to not hear Stinkfist/ Schism/Aenema/Forty Six and 2, etc.. People seem to like to invent things to complain about with Tool when we should be grateful they have stuck around and are still working to give us new music and keep the shows exciting.… Read more »

Third Eye and the Pot as well. Probably some others.

I get a kick out of seeing people genuinely surprised to hear the extended bridge(s) in stinkfist and schism even after all these years. That alone is a good reason to keep them in.

I guess ive been pretty fortunate to see very different setlists nearly every time. I saw them in 2002 (when I was 14 years old), in 2007, 2012, 2017 & 2018. Only set that was the same was 2017 & 2018. I’m flying into Jacksonville for Rockville this Cinco de Mayo. Very excite!

I think we will see the album title/track list announcement some time in April. It would be brilliant if they do a press release on April 1, just because MJK would enjoy trolling the fans a little more. If they have suddenly formulated any sort of respect for the fans they will release a single in May so that they can perform that at the live shows. For me personally it will be a strange moment when we are presented with the actual album title. Considering that I started expecting to hear news of the band preparing to record the… Read more »

It may be your opinion, but I don’t think a lot of people consider ‘Right in Two’ to be a “sub par” track; it is actually a fan favorite for a good amount of people. ‘Intension’ and ‘Rin2’ seem to be one piece like DRT and feels like it fits in with the same tone. Although I wouldn’t say it’s my absolute favorite, it is up there with their best work, and is an accomplishment for them. There’s a reason it is the final song on 10,000 Days and I would be surprised if the new album didn’t have some… Read more »

No way is Intension or Right in Two sub-par tracks. They close out 10,000 Days brilliantly.

While I always enjoyed Right in Two it was never one of my go-to tracks – that is until I finally got to hear it live – I was totally blown away. That track is such a monster in person as you can feel it in your bones on the breakdown.

Never seen Rin2 live, but all the songs are way better live. I can imagine how huge the ending is when they played it. I hope they bring it back one day. I have seen intension live and that totally changed my perspective on it, and I already loved the song. Tool live is the most visceral experience. You can’t be there and not feel it on a molecular level. I don’t know how they get that sound. Words cannot describe how good Danny’s drums sound. The Toms make me want to cry they are so beautiful. It’s like magic… Read more »

Why can’t these guys just lock in a date? They’ve been mixing for a few months now, and I’m sure artwork would have been locked in a while back as well. They’ve been making records long enough to know the timeline of production.

I prefer they don’t jinx it. As long as Trump and Putin don’t have a nuclear pisssing contest, the time will fly by like nothing.

I just wonder if they’re gonna do the small theater warm-ups they tend to do with each album release. Hope they play the Paramount or Stubbs in Austin!

Being there for that Coachella show and them not having played live since 2002, it seemed like an eternity. It was a great show and they came out guns blazing. It is hard to believe that’s almost 13 years ago now and that we’re truly finally on the cusp of the 10K Days follow up. Also hard to believe that Kabir gave up on this ever happening a few years ago. Glad hellboy didn’t or we wouldn’t have this great site. Thanks, Matt! I am sure they will play some new songs for TOOL-starved Europe whether the new album is… Read more »

Some of the songs from EtE were up on YouTube before the album. It doesn’t bother me to hear it live first. When I saw them live in person, I heard some songs for the first time, but it actually made me appreciate the songs more. APC really pulls it off live, and that was my first time seeing them, so it also made me realize how amazing it would have been to see them early in their career.

Will confirm… saw APC on their first tour in ’99 at the Ventura Theatre, pre album. Was just unreal. Not many people were there, Maynard was literally reading off lyric sheets on some songs. You could tell the band was still figuring out the Mer de Noms material and who they were (this being w Paz, Troy VL, and Tim Alexander on drums), but at the same time you got the sense something was HAPPENING onstage. Kinetic energy was in the air, and they were tapping into some type of ‘source’ together, I don’t know how else to put it.… Read more »

Sorry to talk off topic here, but is anyone else a Cog fan?

If so, what do you think of the recent singles?

Going to see them in Sydney Friday so I am pretty stoked!

Which single did you hear? The Middle or Drawn together?

Yeah i love the middle also. Drawn together took me a few times on repeat for it to click. Not a fan of Altered State though, sounds more like a B-side.

So the show was great. I am quite surprised at how good live they still are. After all the last show I saw was 10 years ago, so I expected some kind of degradation. Pleasantly surprised.

I emailed FullScreenDirect about the endless loop when trying to access TA posts and merchandise about a week ago. Seems like they fixed it. I noticed the “Manage Subscriptions” says I have no subscriptions and I can’t find the videos section that were on FullScreen either.

From that little teaser clip we got several months, where they cut it off right before Danny and Justin began to play in the studio, it seems like they have been recording every step of the way. I could watch countless hours of a documentary of them in the studio. I wonder if they have been recording video for every album similar to that home video they did for Undertow at Sound City. So much good stuff to come potentially!

Man videos of them recording would be sweet. With all the cameras around it does make you hopeful, but I doubt anything with this band. Unfortunately. Just rewatched the April fools video of them in studio. Can’t believe that was almost a year ago.
