Following up from yesterdays rumour of Tool entering the mastering phase, a few more bits of info have come to light to put this much closer to the “confirmed” category.
Firstly, electronic artist Of The Trees has tweeted some further detail on his meeting with Tool:
I imagine it was a chance encounter with the band at the airport or some other venue, rather than a planned thing.
Secondly, Adam has posted several photos on his Instagram story feed, one of Joe Barresi carrying what I imagine is a case containing the recordings, and another from the street out front of Gateway Mastering Studios.
What does this all mean? Well for those who don’t know, mastering is the final step in completing the recording. Once done, the only thing left for the band to sort is the release date and packaging. I’d expect that work is already underway regarding this.
For reference, 10,000 Days was mastered sometime in February 2006, and then released in May. Assuming we’re following a similar timeline, it looks like we’re on track for a new Tool album in June. Fingers crossed!
impressive…..most impressive 😉
Easter wabbit down the road.
Hellboy, didn’t you have a “contest” many years ago to guess the release date of the new album? Something in the forums here, I thought? I tried searching but couldn’t find anything. I thought it would be funny to see those guesses, as I bet the latest date guessed was over 2 years ago.

LMAO! What a different time! It’s like it was another planet entirely. What a world.
This is awesome! One step closer!
Do you think Blair will clear this up in the next newsletter?
Fuck!! Within 2-3 months we’ll be rocking out to a new Tool album. The wait is over.
Single within the month???
Possible I guess, but I’m not holding my breath
No.
Just be glad this thing is actually finished. It’s coming.
Anyone know if Maynard is with them?
I heard yes, but I haven’t seen anything to verify that.
It would be weird of them to be mastering the album without him.
I dunno, it’s not actually the band that does the mastering. It’d be weird for him to not sign off the final result though.
I know the band doesn’t do the actual mastering, but I’m sure all 4 members would have to sign off on the final product. Surely he’d be there to hear it as its all finished.
So envious. All the people that get to hear it first. I think this is the longest I’ve anticipated anything. Greatest audio artistry of all time headed our way, right now.
What was the timeline between the release of Vicarious and 10,000 Days release?
Vicarious was released on april 17, 2006 – On maynards birthday…
10,000 Days was released on may 2, 2006
More photos have been posted on Danny’s site. They are of tool with Joe Barresi and Bob Ludwig hanging out.
Oh ye of little faith. The release date will be a double (or triple) album on Good Friday. 4-19-19. The Beatles were bigger than Jesus. But Tool is the second coming. Just in time for Easter. Hellboy was in top form steering us away from the date and keeping the secret. Just my crazy opinion.
These guys will probably drop the release date on April Fools Day, just to mess with people one more time.
I have been thinking the same thing for years..
There is no way they will pass up the opportunity to fuck with us when we are all so eager for any scraps of information. Just giving us the legitimate album details on April fool’s would be great. Nobody would believe it.
I’ve read more comments about Tool doing something on April Fools Day then I’ve had hot breakfasts. Perhaps my unpopular opinion is that Tool doing so would be entirely predictable, and therefore unlikely.
Are we all of the same mind that this will be a double (or triple) album? I’m recalling Blair’s comment in the recent newsletter that we might consider saving a few songs and not listening to them until a later date so as to have new Tool to listen to down the road during Tool’s downtime when we’re all fiending for more. This to me supports the theory that it will be a longer album than just the typical one album release. For example, after a 13 year wait, if we applied Blair’s suggestion to an album like 10,000 days… Read more »
Also, Good Friday here we come.
Not expecting a double album personally, though it’d be nice.
I count Intension and Right In Two as separate (and excellent) songs.
I can dig Intension and Right in Two being separate songs. Just with the forging a blade in the former and cutting it right in two in the latter it they feel connected.
Better chance it’s the fabled “decoy album†than a double album. Let’s not get carried away.
Oh I’m getting very carried away
Any idea on how they plan to distribute the new album? I don’t think I have a CD drive anymore to RIP a CD to mp3s..
They’re going to have to move with the times and go to streaming. There will be vinyl and CD options but the main source of distribution nowadays is streaming.
They’ve mentioned a few times in recent years they are working towards having their music available digitally. I’ll be surprised if this album isn’t available either on streaming services or as some kind of download.
Tour dates are popping up. May 14 Kansas City MO at Sprint Center announced this morning. Ticket on sale 3/15.
Also nes shows as early as May 5th. Does this suggest the new album would be out by then?
I sure hope so, but not holding my breath. Trying to secure a box for the May 13th St. Louis show. Got 20 people committed and what a Monday night party it’s going to be!
I’d be pretty surprised if the album was out by the start of the tour. I don’t see a release until late May at the earliest.
I saw the instagram post from Of the Trees. It was definitely just a random airport encounter. He was geeking out over it.
Side note, Of the Trees is soooo good. Definitely recommend checking out his stuff. Favorite tracks are Our Hero Returns Pt. 3, Harvest, and Everglade March.
