Tool back catalog coming to streaming services Friday

My post this morning focused on the title of the new Tool album Fear Inoculum, but in my haste to get to work had no chance to present the other big news from this morning. Confirmed by Maynard via Tool’s social media accounts – their back catalog will be available on streaming services this Friday the 2nd of August.

It wasn’t explicitly mentioned which ones, but it would be reasonable to assume that the big names in this industry – Spotify, Google Play Music, Apple Music – all would be included. I also wonder if their demo 72826 and Salival will also be available?

In case you missed it, Maynard had a chat with Joe Rogan today, during which he announced Fear Inoculum and this streaming news. This was covered in the first 10 minutes (15 if you include all the advertising) before the conversation largely moved to other areas. I always find it interesting listening to Maynard chat, but if you have no patience for interviews where the focus largely isn’t Tool, then proceed no further.

For those who are interested, you can check it out on Youtube with the video linked below:

It’s about damn time. Awesome! Will there music also be on their youtube channel? Their music videos as well? This is what I am curious about.

Do they run that youtube channel themselves? Last I hard their management/ label was scouring youtube for their material and pulling it off. I know that means reaction videos but I guess that would also mean covers and well anything else Tool related on youtube?

Maynard: Man, it is such a huge weight off my shoulders that I can finally announce the album.

Joe: Hey man, that’s great. Do you ever see rattlesnakes at your vineyard?

I know right! Maynard led in with so many opportunities for Joe to pry into the new TOOL album and he kept talking about dumb shit… Maynard literally saved the release information for the podcast… What a waste…

To be fair, Rogan is probably conditioned from years of “dont ask about Tool or Maynard will walk “lol

I will blame it on Joe. It’s his fucking show and he surely knows how Maynard will just go on and on and on if you get him talking about that god damn wine. It was such a boring interview. The super limited discussion about Tool was so bland.

Yep… I’ll blame it on Joe too… Starts off with a comment about TOOL fans being “rabid”…. then ignores the fact that it has been over 13 years since the last TOOL album was released by ignoring Maynard’s obvious attempts to steer the conversation towards TOOL… (JOE PRETENDS TO BE A FAN OF TOOL and sucks Maynard’s dick in other ways because of benefits and shits). These were softball fucking question opportunities that could have been pounced upon yet… JOE… chose the “winery you’re so fucking great and hard working MAYNARD” path… IT IS “HIS FUCKING SHOW AND HE SURELY… Read more »

The martial arts conversations, holy cow. It just kept coming around and around. Wow. I kept skipping 2 or 3 minutes at a time thinking that they’ll move on, and fucking hell it was excruciating. Joe SO wanted to smoke that huge spliff he was handling at one point. I was just rolling my eyes thinking “fucking grow up man!”. MJK tells him he doesn’t smoke weed and Joe seemed so dissatisfied with that response. Who responds to someone saying that to them with, “Not just a littttttleeee bit?”. I’ve watched the other times MJK has been on and they… Read more »

I won’t go so far as to get upset about it but I do feel like Maynard dropped his relief and excitement about the new album on multiple occasions during the conversation and Joe just side stepped all of them. I honestly just don’t think that Joe really understands the magnitude of the album because he probably knows nothing about TOOL other than they have “rabid fans”… I would have used the word passionately enthusiastic fans but whatever. All I care about is the fact that the album is upon us in a short time and I have a good… Read more »

Joe knows about the magnitude of this album. He’s had Maynard on twice before and probably peruses comments sections when they put the interviews up on YouTube. Maynard would have met him back in the late 80’s, early 90’s when Joe was doing standup with all of the other comedians that Maynard knows. They have a lot of friends in common, both idolised Bill Hicks, loved Art Bell… blah blah blah. Joe could have made the interview so much better, just by asking any kind of question relating to the album. It would have been so simple to just say..… Read more »

Is it possible that the 72826 Demo that was briefly released was done so as a test before they released their catalog?

With the albums going up on Friday it would make sense for the lead single to go up as well. Vicarious was released about 2 weeks before 10K Days dropped.

I’m not sure if it was intended, but it seemed like Rogan didn’t really care about the album news. Maynard seemed keen to talk about the back catalog going to streaming and Fear Inoculus, but Rogan seemed like he just wanted to gloss over it. I’d love to hear Maynard talk about the recording process and the themes of the album. The title is a great conversation starter in itself.

Exactly I’m not freaking out about it like some people, and maynard may not have given a whole lot more info, but he could at least seemed a little interested in the topic and asked what the name means to them

I remember paying $60 for a VHS recording of a MJK interview back in 1996 and waiting 2 months whilst it got posted from USA to Australia. The year is 2019 and I get to watch MJK being interviewed for free on a mobile phone an hour after it happened. Holy Shit! In this interview, I saw an artist excited about sharing the fruits of his and his brothers’ labor. I also saw a man, notorious for being “difficult” to interview, completely at ease (and happy!) with his surroundings. THAT is all Joe Rogan. HE is the one that has… Read more »

Anybody remember an internet mail order service for bootleg audio and video recordings called “The Weathermen”? I got the 96 Montreal show on VHS, along with a Much Music segment with the band. Interviews + music videos, from “Hush” to “Stinkfist”…possibly “Ænema” but not positive. In late 90’s bought a $30 CD called “Third Leg” from the coolest music shop in Baton Rouge (Paradise Records) it was also a ’96 show, I think recorded at a Texas concert (details fuzzy). Fucking “Third Eye” was edited down to about 7 minutes but I didn’t realize it and atleast one other song… Read more »

Don’t remember the mail order service but I do remember Third Leg. If the cover is a close-up of a fly’s eyes then I have the CD in a box in my closet I think. We had a store here in AZ called Shirts and Things and they sold all kinds of bootleg music, concert posters, and tees obviously. Thanks for sharing!!!

Yes! That’s it! The cover is a close up of some kind of insect, it looks like a praying mantis to me. If there’s a way to post\upload a photo I’ll take a few. The date, location is listed as Houston, TX Cullen Auditorium. 12/12/1996, but these bootleg CDs are pretty notorious for being labelled incorrectly. Oh and “Stinkfist” is the song they cut (along with half of Third Eye) to make it fit on just one disc. This CD may be ridiculously overpriced, and a sloppy edit, but the sound quality really isn’t bad and it was my very first… Read more »

I’ll look for it this weekend because I have a couple of Tool bootlegs and vinyl. Huh, did not know that about the H thing. Honestly, I don’t remember ever listening to it, but thanks for mentioning that. Didn’t know that about Ænema either. The first batch of the Lateralus CD had a misspelling on the case insert too. And I too was like that about Tool and other bands I like. I have a few odd bootlegs, but didn’t realize they would be worth anything. Over the years of collecting Tool stuff, two of my favorite things that I… Read more »

Hey here’s the source information for the full version of that recording from the collective unconscious database http://www.collectiveunconscious.org/91to9796dates96.html
I knew I read somewhere it was mislabeled! I have that first printing of “Lateralus” too ! Where its spelled “Lateralis” on the slipcase, the first pressings of “Salival” have a few typos as well. I also have that. I have atleast one Tool shirt I have NEVER seen anyone else wear, if I can find it I’ll take a couple pics. I’d like to see that Opiate shirt of yours sometime !

Someone posted the pages of the Guitar World with the Adam Jones interview on reddit. I won’t post a link in case it’s frowned upon here. Anyway, there is some pretty cool info in it. It seems that the author of the article heard the new album and thought it was great. It seemed from the article that Alex Grey is the artist for the album. It didn’t say if he did the cover but it does say that he was the artist.

I’m glad that there’s going to be magazine spreads to coincide with the album release. Back when Rolling Stone was cool they did articles when Tool albums were about to drop. I remember Spin doing a bunch as well. As much as its convenient to read online, I’ll happily drop money for mags with Tool spreads.

Ugh. I used to have a little collection of magazines that came out around the release of “Lateralus”, hyping the album etc. There was a “Spin” with a photo of the whole band on it’s cover, but with a line over their eyes. I think a “Revolver” too, maybe a “Kerrang”. One had a strange photoshopped picture of Maynard, maybe Adam as well? I took really good care of them for a LONG time, then my shitty girlfriend at the time wanted to read them and basically lost them, because that’s the kind of ridiculous shit she always does… Sorry… Read more »

So, I don’t think we will get a single tomorrow. These fuckers are notorious for making us wait. They officially stated their catalog will go streaming tomorrow. No mention of a single tomorrow, so my guess is it’s not happening. I’m thinking a single, 2 weeks prior to album release.

Yeah I think a single drop will be about that time as well. While I’d like to see one go up tomorrow, they aren’t the kind of band to do a sneak release, they just wait until the very last minute.

I read on another forum (echoingthesound.org) that we could also be getting the albums in HD audio formats, like 24 bit flac, wav etc. I really hope so, or maybe even remastered versions.(didn’t hear that I’m just being wishful) The Deftones quietly uploaded their whole catalogue with remastered audio as well as HD audio versions in 2016… just saying it’s happened before, and there was lots of talk in the last few years about the Tool back catalogue getting remastered. Remember those photos of the master tapes?

lol, no. They definitely wouldn’t remaster Aenima, Lateralus or 10k,the mix and master on those are incredible.

Undertow has aged a bit I guess. Opiate is definitely not on par with anything else, but a remaster wouldn’t fix it.

I have purchased the tracks from HDTracks. I can confirm they are definitely master tracks in 24/96. Whilst not remasters, they are from Bob Ludwig master transfers. Conversation I had with this chap on reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/ToolBand/comments/ckzfkj/2496_versions_on_hdtracks/evryfwx?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x Also something else I can say is this… I am somewhat of an Audiophile with really good gear. I usually only listen to FLAC or vinyl. This is the best I have ever heard Tool. The clarity and seperation of instruments is amazing. If this is not the “remastered” versions that are due to come out. (Which I don’t believe they are, as I… Read more »

Been listening to Ænima for over 20 years (sure I’m not the only one). I bought\downloaded the 24 bit flac version the second it showed up, and yeah, as soon as the music erupts after the Stinkfist intro sample… you WILL hear the difference! It’s worth it and it’s glorious!
Anyone with comments on the other albums, especially “Opiate” and “Undertow” I’d love to hear them as it’ll be a little while before I may get 24 bit copies…
