Fear Inoculum leaks

As I’m sure many of you are aware, Fear Inoculum seems to have leaked onto the internet. A couple of quick things:

  • Please don’t post links to the leak in the comments section, they will be deleted
  • I don’t mind discussion about the leak, or thoughts on the album
  • Out of respect for the band and the process, I won’t be posting my thoughts here until Friday (I may discuss on the forum or Discord though
  • Not so keen on hearing people get on their high horses defending or talking up leaks.

Enjoy the release week my friends

She’s a beauty. Culling Voices is the underdog here. Considering the length of the songs this album just flies by. Definitely worth the wait.

I thoroughly enjoyed CCTrip, I’m glad it wasn’t just the same as the live versions I’ve heard before. It was just 5 mins of pure Danny Carey, how could a tool fan not like that lol.

Yeah I can see how drums solos are not really a person’s thing, and typically I am not into most drummers indulging in that type of thing, but this is Danny fucking Carey we are talking about. How you could delete something the greatest drummer of all time put his heart and soul into. Even if it does nothing for you, at the very least there is some really nice textures with the way the drums interact with the synthesizer. At least let it gel a little while before you decide it’s garbage.. sheesh..

Yeah no doubt that everyone interested in pirating it is a tool fan, and if you’re a tool fan, you have already bought the album. I don’t really consider it piracy then. Also why do people have this lame idea in their heads that they can’t listen to a leak because it’s not the official date yet? ooh no tool is gonna be so sad. no.

Who gives a shit if it leaked? It was going to be on streaming sites for free…in like 4 days. What is the big deal? I downloaded 10,000 Days a month before it was released and I fuckin loved every second of it, just like I’m about to do now with Fear Inoculum, and then in a few days I’ll have the physical copy that won’t matter because it doesn’t even have the segues on it like the album was intended. And apparently they have a lot more material, at least Justin, Danny and Adam has been grooving a lot these years according to some interviews. Usually Maynard is the last guy in.

I have a feeling this is definitely not the last album.

Maynard is always the last guy in because that’s how they like to do it, not because it takes Maynard longer to make his parts than the others. He’s bottlenecked by the other’s constant bickering and obsession with rewriting riffs and exploring every avenue and whatnot, from what I’ve read anyway.

I think this is the issue with our society, as a whole, and the fact most of you have downloaded the leak attests to that. We live in an instant gratification state. We’re not willing to be patient and wait it out. Some how we feel entitled to have everything, NOW. If you don’t download it, the market wont be there for this person to steal someone’s work. But increasing their downloads demonstrates stealing is acceptable. Regardless if youve purchased a copy, how do you think the creators of this music would feel if they found out you illegally downloaded… Read more »

Jcx, was that an answer to my question? Because even using the words streaming and revenue is this regard is laughable. Look into it. But let’s pretend there is a profit to be made in …..streaming revenue for the band. They got millions of streams for songs that have been out for a decade +. I doubt the leak is going to make much of a difference. Additionally the original poster was trying to make the point that even if you supported the band by preordering the album, which you know 98% of the people in here did, it was… Read more »

By distributing the CDs to retailers before the release date, I am pretty sure they where aware of the high risk of leaking. The consequences are not that bad, I guess. It will be available for free on Spotify++ anyways. And, most fans have already purchased one or several copies, I would guess.

Dude, it’s 2019. If you think that Tool is going to be surprised by anyone “illegally” downloading their album, you’re an idiot. THEIR ENTIRE CATALOG INCLUDING THEIR NEW ALBUM IS FREE. Do you no understand streaming platforms? There is no stealing anymore. There is no such thing as “illegal” downloading, when the band is releasing it on streaming for free anyway. If Tool was smart, they would be excited to know that everyone is still downloading their leaks because we’re excited. If nobody was downloading the leak, then Tool might need to worry. I’m happy with his contributions when they happen. He’s become progressively less a part of the process as time goes on, and I think it creates some vocal droughts in some of the songs. Not his fault as he does a good job with what he’s given. Hard to put vocals over some of the highly technical bits that can drag on at times. You saw less of that when he was more involved. Like I said good album, but I think the songs would benefit from him being there. Just my opionion.

Pneuma is the highlight for me at the moment. Fucking. Wow. Production, incredible. This is the best they’ve sounded. Danny has gone another level. I do miss Maynard’s aggression. But his melodies are phenomenal. In some ways I think this is their best work yet – quite obviously so. Immediately more likeable that 10kd was. It’s definitely their sound, evolved. As for your remark in contrast to 10,000 Days… I don’t think we’d be able to appreciate Fear Inoculum if we didn’t spend time interpreting and soaking in the content from 10,000 Days.

This album is beastly and just such a different animal than anything they’ve ever done. You can really hear the growth and maturity but you can also hear them drawing from the past as well. They are on full display here it’s fucking insane.

Loving the album so far. I was super critical on the first listen, but I’ve come round. Based on the early press reviews, Culling Voices was a real surprise favourite. However; I reckon on ‘Invincible’ they maybe should have cut out from 6:52 to 10:52. Made the track a little tighter. Then in a year or so of touring they throw that in as an extended live version. It’s possible they jammed on it for so long they wanted their ‘extended’ versions to be on the album and so here we are. Also I’ve had my doubts over the mix…… Read more »

My source was one of the first from the discord while it was happening – wetransfer. The files were a weird false .mp3 that I converted to .wav in VLC… I’ve since tried converting them to regular .mp3 and ALAC in iTunes with no better result. Did you guys check the times I specified and not hear the distortion? Also I don’t need specifics, but are you listening through a car sound system, headphones, speakers?

Edit: I didn’t mention bitrate or file size because the conversions obviously change them. The original download was about 450MB (archived) though.

Yeah I started with the wetransfer rar which played on VLC but I needed files for my car so got an update by the usual means (450mb)- listening via Bose headphones or in the car bang n olufsen speakers. Would love FLAC but sounds great.

Yeah just got it again from a different site, even though I’m sure there was only one source. Still distorted. The fact that it’s only 450mb is kind of telling, seeing as that is way too small for a high quality rip, especially of this length.

Maybe I should rephrase the distortion… The sound is more similar to the crack and pop when playing a vinyl record, but this is consistent when certain levels get too high throughout the album. I almost feel like the retard who ripped it, took it at 128kbps and then it has been falsely ‘up-scaled’ via conversion.

adoxnz

There is no way its a 128 reconvert. That would be obvious.

I’m listening in an acoustically treated room on high end monitors… Not hearing the things you speak of..?

I’ve noticed its mastered quietly (compared to modern standards). Bravo to that.

I wouldn’t worry about the issue anyway… Evil Joe and Bob Ludwig … Reasonably experienced pros

The 128 was tongue-in-cheek. At least you understood the severity of what I’m saying though.
As I said previously, the verse 12:46 in 7empest showcases what I’m talking about. It’s a fuzzy hiss, and notable as this is comparatively not a loud part of the record. I’ve listened to it through many speakers, cars, headphones… two different files (same source I assume) and it’s still there.

Whisp

Reply to  Whisp

as in listen to that whole section 12:45 to 13:22, turn it up loud.. 13:08 & 13:14 being some of the louder fuzz offending moments… I want to sincerely say that it’s my rip. Though I’m 99% positive we all have the same source files, meaning if you’re listening for it (though it’s frustratingly obvious to me) you should hear it. Again, these moments are dotted throughout the rest of the album.

I went in assuming that it would be the bass or guitar. That distortion starts with the drum part coming in so I think it has to do with the rip quality.

This is an album for fans who are patient (which I guess most of us are after 13 years). I spent 5-6 full rounds before I was able to “get it”. This is not Ænima with “to-the-point” and “easy going” songs. However, the album is very complete, and there is no boring parts like with 10k days (which is a EP with some pause music). It may not be better than Lateralus (I am not sure – if you care ask me in 10 years), but it is their most complete and coherent album ever in my honest opinion. This… Read more »

I can agree with a lot of what you are saying. Pretty good overview I think. Referencing my earlier post though, I still take a little problem with Justin’s levels being too low at some points while Adam is definitely at the forefront a lot of the time (coming from a guitarist). Also the drums can be very muddy, with cymbals on some tracks being heavily gated. But yes, the overall soundscape is very well done.

This is a spot on review. Besides 7empest, this isn’t your rock out Tool album, and I’m perfectly fine with that. It definitely leans to the quieter side but is so compelling in that Tool way.

I disagree that the drums are in the background, they’re mixed nice and full to my ears. The drum mix seems perfect to me.

Maynard is quiet for a vocal.

Adam maybe a shade too loud in parts. Justin sometimes a bit quiet.

The overall processing and soundstage. I agree, incredibly good.

Agree. To be more specific, I didn’t mean that the drums are not full or not present – but they are well placed in the soundstage. However I also agree with whisp that they sometimes are a bit muddy. This could be the rip offs fault, there are some distortion as well on loud volum.

I think Maynards contributions are fine. Hes obviously made a choice to not sing all the way through some tracks, ie Descending but he’s prominent enough for me. I love what he’s done. Considering he’s front and center for two other bands he’s pulled back here to let the others shine

I appreciate that he didn’t fill every nook and cranny with growls and screams like the old days and just sang beautifully on crucial moments and let the band take over on on some of the heavier moments.

Even though the vocals come second to me, I will say that initially I missed his triumphant moments in the climax of songs.. it’s still there on some… though the more I listen and digest the music does just fine.

Can you give me one example of a Tool song where Maynard fills every ‘nook and cranny’ with growls and screams? They aren’t Korn or Slipknot, and even those bands have sections in almost all of their songs where there are no vocals…

I am very happy with this album. I am glad I lived to hear it. It’s beyond incredible. 10/10

I’m 42 years old and I have thought from time to time … will I live to hear new music from TOOL? Happily, yes…

2 or 3 years ago I was suspecting that there would be some kind of announcement that the band had decided to cut their losses and were going their own seperate ways.
It seems from recent interviews that this had crossed their minds.

said anything about what? as if the album leaking is some kind of worry or surprise to them?

Yeah I think I’m going to remove CCTrip from the playlist all said and done. It was great to see it live and will still be great to see it live but I don’t think that has any business on the album. Everything else… “HULK SMASH!!!!!” Amazing.

i can understand removing Faaip de oaid from a playlist but CCTrip is danny carey being the most danny carey he can be for 5 minutes straight, I can’t for the life of me understand how any actual Tool fan or music fan, or musician, could not like that track of demonic summoning. Oh well you know what they say, “The lips of wisdom are closed…” I’ll let you finish the rest.

Love CCTrip. A refreshing ‘out’ moment on an otherwise tightly scripted narrative. Would take a whole album of DC+synth. It may make more sense to people with all the segues in place.

Maybe I gotta give it more time I dunno. It’s just not doin it for me. Feels like an unnecessary interruption. If DC+Synth were its own separate album sure I’d listen to it on its own but in this context I dunno. Doesn’t sit right with me. Time will tell.

Maybe as it’s the currently the only segue we have, you find it jarring and out of place? I must say it’s exactly what I wanted out of a DC only track, and a good cousin to Merkaba.

Yeah I am digging CC but I can see how at this point, it being the only segue, that it can seem kinda pointless when all of the songs have no interruptions between them. I still feel that it fits just fine in it’s place on the album as is. Excited for the other three tracks!

Yeah I disagree! I think it’s a great piece, that allows a showcase of Danny going crazy – in a way which wouldn’t work with the others.

I find it interesting that you’re basing your opinion on an incomplete leak. Without segues… But each to their own 😛

It’s god awful and sounds like something you’d record when testing mic placement on the drums, and synth connections.
If it had some redeeming qualities like some kind of voiceover, or speaking sample like Lost Keys, that would have helped it.
I successfully predicted it being awful a few threads ago when I saw it in the tracklist and UNBELIEVABLY it was even WORSE than I could have imagined.
I thought other members may have added sounds/effects to it which they really should have done.

*I think* it’s god awful.

*I think* if it had some redeeming qualities

*I successfully predicted my own opinion*

See how easy it is to not state your opinion as facts? You’re welcome xo

I didn’t say ‘I know’. I said ‘I think’.
Hence it’s my opinion.

On my 6th listen through this morning.

I think this is their best album (for me personally, if not objectively). I never felt that about 10K, as much as I do love that album.

This shit is melting me down and I haven’t even Rosetta tested it yet 😉

I agree . Upon a few listens , this album has became my favorite . Theme, music , lyrics and all . They are showing a vulnerability that I’ve never seen from them . So I don’t mind that there isn’t any screaming .. apparently Mjk has grown and moved through or away from that . Regardless , I do feel this is a lateralus- esque masterpiece with “Descending “ being one of their best songs in their catalogue . Just excited at where they are and I don’t think they are through creating music together
