The second coming of Fear Inoculum

I was having a chat with one of my sources today (in this case a quite reliable one) who felt the urge to have me relay the following onto the rabid Tool fanbase out there:

Don’t go spending hundreds on eBay chasing after a limited copy of Fear Inoculum – there are more being printed.

No word on when this might be, but I’d expect relatively soon.

If you’re like me and haven’t received your copy yet, and are keen to see what it’s about, check out the unboxing video on Metal Addicts.

Update: the band have confirmed via Twitter that they will make and sell another batch available via their store:

And how is Blair doing, mein Hellboi?
No doubt he has had to find something else to do now that his newsletter has been rendered moribund.

Hey hellboy. Hager you listened to the Ernie Ball podcast with Justin yet? He confirms in that, that the recent digital releases were infact remastered. Bob Ludwig did them specifically. Makes sense as how amazing the FLAC files sounded.

whats amazing is that we don’t have access to HD flac or any other audio better than 16 bit 44100 khz even if we spent the $50 to buy the damn CD, that comes with a fuckin MP3 card bullshit. who the fuck wants mp3 quality tool, seriously? I paid more money for this album than any other album in my life and i want hd audio files bitch.

Says it’s already sold out for international. Looks like this will be the only tool album I don’t have a physical copy of. This whole thing is arse and a slap in the face to us old fart long time fans. At least I have a digital copy, streaming can suck my d@#k.

Yeah I just realised that. Thought it was last night/this morning. Still pissed off my pre order didn’t make it. And I still think the whole thing is a bad joke.

“… a small additional quantity is being made.”

Lies. The additional quantity being made will match however many they just sold today. And that number is a lot, probably ~30,000.

This is a very salient point. This new pre order is just that. An actual order form which will be simply forwarded to the manufacturer. The pre order link was however many units were purchased in the timeframe. And I believe probably HALF or MORE of the stock for the new pre order has been sitting in a warehouse, with the rest of the original stock that was mailed. Held under embargo until the second preorder (which was planned from day 1) was announced. The creation of supposed ‘scarcity’, worked well for the band. Is this such a bad thing?… Read more »

Mine turned up this afternoon. Damn, the photos don’t do this package any justice. It’s a thing of beauty. The artwork is amazing. I’ll be getting a 2nd copy as soon as the ore order opens up.

Beautiful package.

$180 in NZ. It’s 45 in USA.

Yes I’m familiar with currency conversion and shipping costs.

Still can’t purchase a download online for the full album in full (like at least CD) quality. Unless I use a VPN.

I’m disappointed with everything in this equation except for the music itself haha.

I’m still waiting for the standard edition CD…I have the deluxe edition but my friends don’t wanna shell out $35 and wait for more deluxe editions to hear a cd quality album. Tool just thinks everyone wants to stream that shit? BS. Audiophiles want CD’s. Why call it a “limited edition” or “deluxe edition” if there is no standard edition CD? How is that even an edition if there’s only one version? The hell is going on here

SHELL OUT $35?

Let me get out my tiny violin for you. It costs $180 in New Zealand. And we can’t download from HD tracks or Qobuz here. There is literally no legal way to hear the album in hi def. Cheers Tool. I am not going to give you any money this time.

Yes, there has been a lot of interest in my opinion of the core album tracks. I have not made any statements publicly yet. This leads me to this announcement, which is that I am willing to write my in depth review of the album if mon Hellboi will agree to post it, unadulterated, as a new thread on the main page.

i agree with that sentiment. however that just proves my point even further, there shouldn’t be an issue with the fact that the “deluxe ‘edition'” was undermanufactured, over twice as expensive as a normal album would be, and is sold out everywhere. That would be fine with me, if Tool just did what every fucking artist does and what they’ve always done for 28 years, release a normal fucking CD so people like you can have a high quality physical copy legally. I love the album, and especially the segues because it just makes the album flow so much better.… Read more »

I’m a photographer who sells prints in editions of 10. If, after selling those 10, I sold additional prints … is that ethical? I think my customers would be pissed. Is there going to be something to differentiate the 1st printing vs the 2nd? When I buy something that is “limited edition”, part of me hopes it will someday increase in value. I bought 2 copies of Fear Inoculum as soon as they went on sale, one to open and enjoy, and one to “hang on to”. Is this the ever rumored “curveball”?

Get high, do what you do, then listen to the album backwards (start with 7empest, end with FI). You can thank us later… Particularly fun on an iPad, turn her upside down and the spiral of eyes on the cover takes the most decided of turns… Enjoy!

Hmm I liked that actually. 7empest isn’t really a good album closer, it’s too raw and hard and is a good intro song like intolerance or the grudge or stinkfist, vicarious etc…And fear inoculum is an epic closer. But legion inoculant needs to be before descending because of the wind transitions, so i’d just switch the order of those two when playing it backwards, otherwise good catch man. i prefer it that way and i don’t ever like messing with tool’s previous album orders, but this is better.

Grey’s artwork, specifically “The Turn”, with heavy emphasis on that middle spiral thorax thing. To me that’s where Descending is ‘located’ in the art, middle of the road kinda thing. Couple that with the little packaging video and the lyrics for 7empest/Fear Inoculum (7empest is all about some tempting menace out there, the deathly side to Grey’s piece, FI is all about ditching the deceiver, the more enlightened end of Grey’s piece). Kinda makes perfect sense that the album can be played both forward and ‘backwards’. Totally agree that 7empest is more of an opener than a closer, Chocolate Chip… Read more »

i don’t think tempest has anything to do with a tempting menace as much as just a menace, but more specifically just the concept of a tumultuous storm of chaos in general. tempest just means storm. but yes i get your point. i’m not so sure they put alot of thought into incorporating secret track orders into the art this time lol, unlike 10,000 Days, with the whole tree of life riddle and the merging of three tracks, or how faaip de oaid syncs up dubbed over lost keys.

Yuppo, not trying to take this any further than need be, just kinda playing off the two-headed artwork, you can go out one head or out the other while listening forward or in reverse. To me, reverse is the more natural way to exorcise them demons!

Your analogy doesn’t work. Tool never stated a specific production quantity for the limited edition; whereas, you did. Additionally, Tool never said, “After a certain date, no more will ever be made.” They left it open-ended with “limited edition” implying that at some point, production will cease.

I’m certainly not a fan of the method they used, but I won’t argue that it’s unethical. There was no deceit. I don’t like it; it’s hokey, but it isn’t uncommon either. Bands on Bandcamp do it all the time.

Is there any information on “NORMAL” CD version?
Everyone is talking aboth “DELUXE” version and I get that, but some of us simply dont understand spending +100€ on a music CD with fancy video packaging that your going to watch few times and then put aside.
Dont get me wrong, been a Tool fan since 98″ but this is just too much for me.

i don’t understand why anyone would actually want to listen to Tool on vinyl. they’re a modern, dynamic sounding band. Vinyl automatically cuts out alot of the dynamics and frequency range. muddles the highs and lows. the only music i really can tolerate on vinyl is older music because it isn’t as dynamic in volume and frequency anyway, and the specific EQ differences engineers make to the music when pressed on vinyl that gives it that “warmth” illusion just makes the music worse, esp tool.

Vinyl is the final medium. Analogue sound has a different frequency spectrum indeed. In this case you get an hybrid formulae where both worlds, digital & analog collide which will just reveal another perspective. The technical argument angle is just a side of many. And as you inferred above, technology has evolved so much that it only makes sense to merge them and not over impose one over the other. Furthermore vinyl is an unique piece, a physical medium that has value simply by existing. I’ll probably listen the album the “modern” way as you say, vinyl is just a… Read more »

No shit sherlock, Tool themselves only records to analog tape reels, and then mixes it digitally. You can actually fit dynamic frequencies on tape that you can’t express on vinyl. CD’s express the dynamic range of the original recording, while vinyl simply dulls it down and compresses the extreme highs and lows. Going from analog tape to vinyl is a downgrade, mixing tape to digital is an upgrade with the limitless options for mixing and mastering to a digital format that we can actually perceive in the end.

May not be the right place to say this but I have too. I couldn’t ne more disappointed in Fear Innoculom. 7 songs 80 minutes. Nuff said. Tool has become a jam band. We all should have seen this coming . their last couple of albums started leaning this way. We as tool fans deserved a double album with 25 songs after a 13 year wait. Instead we get put to sleep with 4 minute intros 2 minutes of Maynard breathing and 5 minutes of Adam solo. I long for the days when they would blow your mind with power… Read more »

I couldn’t disagree with you more. I think it’s a masterpiece and after 30 odd listens now, my opinion is more solid than ever.

You don’t “deserve” anything as a Tool fan. Tool are a bunch of dudes who like playing instruments and writing songs together. You get to listen when they’ve made something which satisfies them. Sounds like you don’t really understand the creative process. Writing for someone else’s taste is not fun. Sounds like you’ve grown apart from this band, friend. Best let it go 😉

You obviously have no chill factor, no patience, and no taste for a refined band like Tool. You sound like all of the edgy cool kids in 2001 when Lateralus came out and half of the old Tool fans jumped ship because it was “pussy rock” or some other equivalent douchebag term. Their music obviously isn’t intended for someone like you, go back to the radio and listen to your 5 minute cookie cutter happy meals with plastic toys in them for you to gawk at while the rest of us let Tool’s music take us to new heights. “the… Read more »
