After what feels like many years of speculation it appears Tool are finally getting around to releasing the re-recorded version of Opiate. Here’s the details from Facebook:
Taking it back to the beginning, Tool celebrates the 30th anniversary of their first commercially-available release, Opiate, with a re-imagined and extended version of the EP’s title track and an accompanying short film. “Opiate2†(pronounced Opiate Squared) is available via streaming services on March 1, with the Blu-ray only visual companion available on March 18 (pre-order on Amazon).
Visual artist Dominic Hailstone (“Alien: Covenantâ€, “The Eelâ€) worked with Adam on the 10-plus minute film, which is the band’s first new video in 15 years. Dominic and Adam also collaborated on the filmed pieces featured on the current Fear Inoculum tour.

From what I recall, this is the “curveball” that Blair hinted at on Toolband many years ago – it’s great to see the outcome of this at last!
The package itself looks very similar to the book edition of Fear Inoculum. According to the Amazon listing:
Opiate2 is a special limited edition package, that includes a reimagined and extended version of the TOOL classic track. The song is presented on a blu-ray DVD that features a ground breaking short film directed by Dominic Hailstone. Bonus features include insight and observation from special guests, and this blu-ray disc comes in a special 46 page hardcover art book that includes behind the scences and making of photos. The song was originally released in 1992. TOOL have been performing this version of the song live on tour, but this is the first time the studio version of this song is available, along with a stunning visual in a commemorative package.

If you’re looking for an Australia pre-order site, I did notice that JB Hi-fi have them up already. Support your local record store though!

What the fuck is a Blu-ray?
i wanted to write the same thing!!! 😛
This is “limited” in the same way that the Fear Inoculum release was “limited,” i.e. it’s not.
Yeah, I don’t think anyone is thinking that it’s “limited” in a meaningful way (aside from the marketing team I guess). I’m sure plenty of people will by them, and there is a limit as to how many will be printed, but I don’t see them selling out anytime soon.
I got an email today from JB Hi-fi saying this had been delayed until March 25th.
Not too surprised by that, with a relatively short turnaround time on this item, and presumably still covid-related shipping delays.
Yeah. I wonder if it’s just us non-US residents with the delay, or everyone. Be interesting to know, as I’m sure if it’s just non-US than the rips will be up online pretty quick. I for one am really intrigued by what this video is going to be like.
