A usually reliable source told me over the weekend that Tool will be appearing in Guitar Hero 4, with the track Schism, Vicarious and Parabola available to play. Apparently the graphics used during the songs will not be the usual seen in GH, but a conglomerate of Alex Grey artwork and the eyes from Lateralus and Aenima. More details on this as they come to hand.
Sounds like fun, but personally I’d be a little dissappointed with the track selection if this was the case. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Stinkfist, Aenima, or for something a little more challenging – Rosetta Stoned. What would you guys like to see?
intension
First off, I’m a bit surprised they decided to leave out selections from Undertow or Opiate. The more primal tones seem like they’d fit a bit easier with the whole Guitar Hero vibe.
Honestly I would have enjoyed seeing Forty Six & 2. Stinkfist, Lateralus or Right in Two would have been fun as well. And although I suppose Wings for Marie/10,000 Days would have been asking a bit much, that could have been quite a trip.
Remember that the GH games have to cater to a really wide audience as well as kids and families, so songs like Stinkfist, Aenima and Prison Sex never stood a chance for obvious reasons.
Schism would be the only fun track to play out of that bunch I think.
Keep in mind this is a good thing. Not for the reason that guitar hero tool fans can now jam along to tool but because there is a way to hack into the game and seperate the tracks and remix the songs. This has been done by the people over at livenirvana.com some may know what Im talking about but its pretty awsome. Some people submitted some great remixes of nirvana songs because of it. You could even edit the vocals out and record your own.

I do play GH4 once in awhile but I never ever want to see TOOL in any GH game, I love that they won’t put out a dvd(although I would like to have it) I love that they put out a cd every 4-5yrs(although I would like to have one sooner) and I love that they march to the beat of theyr’e drum. But if they decide to give the ok of being on GH4 it would be selling out to the masses in my opinion of course. Can you imagine some asshole learning about TOOL because of a fucking… Read more »
I think I’m going to throw up…
Toolfan91, the song “Hooker with a Penis” may just be about you buddy.
Can see where I’m going here?
Yes unfortunately.
It’s also quite easy to find Tool ringtones in my experience, but rarely is that sort of thing sanctioned by the band.

um ok
Toolfan91, if you were a Tool fan you would know that the band is a huge fan of the Guitar Hero series and have posted pictures of them playing the game. I honestly don’t think they’re doing it for the money. Also, the fact that they still hold artistic control over what type of graphics can be played in the background (something no other band has done for GH yet) shows to me that they haven’t sold out.
I think its obvious now if this is true that this is the development that Blair was writing about earlier, the one that might or might not happen. The band was probably sitting down to talk with the proper channels about what kind of artistic control they would like over it if they agreed to share a few of their songs. Who cares if someone learns about Tool because they heard their music in a game? What’s so bad about that? Music doesn’t have to be worked for, if someone hears something they like and decides to go out and… Read more »
I agree with Ibex. Too many Tool fans have this pretentious elitist douche attitude. Who gives a shit how someone gets into music; it doesn’t affect you in any way whatsoever. As Ibex said, you don’t have to earn the right to enjoy music…it’s just amazing how some fans epitomize the type of people Tool criticize in their music and interviews time and time again. It’s either “10k days is garbage you fucking sellouts, don’t you dare put your music in video games, only simpletons play video games!” or “God Tool is the best band ever, I’m going to worship… Read more »
I really havnt been happy with tool in the last few years… last tour (for the most part) was not nearly on par with past ones…. the last 20 dates there was no setlist change whatsoever… not to mention they played the same set two nights in a row at the same venue which says alot about how much they care about their fans… they dont. now this? comon now. tool wont even release a live DVD but they will put their songs in some commercial video game. pathetic. tool cares much more about $$$ than about their art… and… Read more »

The way people are exposed to and get their music has changed. I think we can all agree that it’s hard to find good music on the radio. Most of the time, I’m listening to the bluegrass station here. I’m not the kind of person that goes out of my way to find good music, so I discovered quite a few bands that i liked through RockBand and Guitar Hero. The first of which comes to mind is Wolfmother – they had “Woman” on GH2. I bought some Coheed&Cambria b/c I liked their Rockband songs. I am a huge RockBand… Read more »
I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
A lot of other great bands have songs of theirs on Rock Band and Guitar Hero.
It does bother me a little bit, but I understand. Tool is sacred to every die-hard Tool fan.
As Maynard said “A lot of our fans are artists”. People won’t all of a sudden start loving Tool because of the game..’
Also, if Tool cared more about money then their fans they WOULD be releasing DVDs… Your logic is flawed.
I don’t like this idea. It is up to the band to release the rights of the songs for a game but it goes against everything they have said in interviews and such. They always talk about how they do not want to be with the mainstream junk that you see on tv and are coming out with records every year. Putting music in a video game like Guitar Hero, in my opinion is a sad thing. I personally prefer playing the real guitar and I get quite tired of hearing people talk about how good they are at playing… Read more »
Ok, lets get something straight. I am a huge TOOL fan, I think what they represent is magical and can argue so many points for basic and complex humanity. They are the reason why i recieved distinction in my art and design BTEC diploma. They inspire me to amazing levels of creativity. Now the band may not agree with that, people may think its pathetic that i can be influenced by ‘music’, but i dont care. I was shocked when I heard about this as I didnt thonk they would agree to something like this, and I was angry for a while because I couldnt really understand.  But… Read more »
