Tool August 2012 Newsletter out now!

The August Tool 2012 Newsletter is up on Toolband and this month Blair talks about entymology and some kind of secret band meeting. Anyone care to speculate what the meeting was about? Recording? Live DVD? The Pot video?

I’ll throw in some rampant speculation. This guy is going to be their new sound engineer/producer, and he came by to check out the Loft and all their gear and shit.

Tool is going into the amazon forest to trip on ayahuasca with the shamans.

Yeah I can only think that they maybe starting pre-production on the new tracks and interviewed an engineer…..obviously Rance Q. Spartley and Gaffny Kirkaldy seem to be aliases so hope all you code-crackers out there are up to the challenge!!

spARTley…. album art?

Yea, all I can gather from this particular load of BS is that the band will still be working in The Loft and not traveling elsewhere to finish the album. There was basically nothing in that entire “newsletter” At least for Blair he got it out of the way early lol.

Has Tool ever toured in South and Central America, or Asia (other than Japan)…? That was my first thought when I read this, but the whole Aloke India Birthday wish might have thrown me. Reading into the Zombie Wasps is super interesting. Couldn’t find the Bethesda talk he mentioned.

I believe the meeting was about Walking Sticks in general…Their diet, distribution, and current ecological threats.

They’re probably just trying to find a way to have that stick bug play the drums for Danny. Lazy bastards

It probably means that they are going to release the new Tool album under the disguise of being something like Tool coasters. So you’re just using them to put your drink on so that you don’t get water stains on your new mahogany coffee table when all of a sudden it moves or plays music or something… and you’ll be surprised and then be all like “Damn, I really should have payed more attention to UndKeineEier’s rambling nonsensical posts” and I’ll be there enjoying that new Tool album long before any of you people because I always put my new… Read more »

They are getting ready to record. I daresay they are much further along in the writing / pre-production phase than they are making out to be.

Album will be done before APC tours down under I’d say.

When I was young, prior to the age of 6, I would often see Stick Bugs similar to the one pictured. About 1/4 of the way through the sixth year of my life I moved. I didn’t move that far, yet I don’t believe I’ve seen more than one of those creatures since then. Weird.

Been a few mentions of identical things (spider webs, coins) in past few newsletters not to mention band member decoys. I really think they are planning the first live 3D broadcast around the world – Tool as holograms? I recall MJK was fond of this idea not too long ago to cut down on his travelling…

^maybe the indentical references meant a double/2-disc album is coming? Where was it mentioned that they may try to record it somewhere other than the loft? Maybe, like others have guessed, they’re going to an exotic location…maybe Machu Picchu?

Maybe they’re going to record it in the attic of your house!

It’ll probably be a double album, but it’ll be one disc. Like one on each side. I don’t even know if that’s possible, they do something like that for DVDs. I imagine they could do it for CDs.

Hmmm… Rance Q. Spartley. Rance is a scottish name meaning tool. And Gaffer is one who is onvolved int he lighting of a film production. This usually refers to a movie but in Tool’s case it could also apply to their live concert presentation. The reference to Borneo, gamelan percussion and Danny alludes to the use of the gamelan percussion which i will be very excited to hear incorporated into danny’s drumming inthe upcoming album. Overall, the code is a tough nut to crack. The make-believe professor has stirred up controversy and attention for his actions and discoveries. They seem… Read more »

Whoever said “record it somewhere other than at the loft”….. They don’t record at the loft. The loft is where they write. They don’t record there. They record in a studio… or multiple studios. Not trying to be mean, but recording a record as well-produced as a Tool record would be impossible in a weird apartment type structure. Unless they’re Minor Threat, or Kyuss…. or pre-Bleach Nirvana, they would not wanna do that.

And the guy who said Rance is a name referring to a kind of tool isn’t bullshitting…..
“Rance \r(a)-nce, ran-ce\ as a boy’s name. Possibly an occupational name from an old Scottish term for a tool similar to a reamer.”

We might ACTUALLY be onto something here…. Which is blowing my mind, since I don’t think anyone has ever cracked a code of Blair’s…

Also, did anyone look into that whole “weird bugs hatching out of Vicarious DVD” thing to see if it was actually more than 2 weird people?

And bug noises for a segue…. Good idea, person-up-there-that-I-can’t-quote-for-some-reason. The most logical thought I’ve heard on here yet. That’s my vote now. They are, after all, a band… recording music… who use lots of segues. If they record a bunch of cicada’s though, I will be kind of upset. I get enough of that on my porch.

Danny also visited Peru or some jungley-country a few years back to record sounds. So maybe we can expect to hear some wild bugs and sounds of the jungle as a segue or intro to a track. Only Tool could make it kickass.

Meaning of the last name Spartley
The meaning of Spartley come may come from a profession, such as the name “Archer” which was given to people who were bowmen. A lot of these trade-based surnames may be a profession in a different language. Because of this it is good to research the country of origin of a name, and the languages spoken by it’s ancestors. Many names like Spartley originate from religious texts such as the BhagavadgÄ«tā, the Bible, the Quran, and so forth. Often these surnames are shortened versions of a religious expression such as “Favored of God”.

and Q “The Semitic sound value of Qôp (perhaps originally qaw, “cord of wool”, …” so we’ve got Rance, (reamer,) “A reamer is a metalworking tool used to create an accurate sized hole. The process is called reaming. They may be used as a hand tool or in a machine tool, such as a milling machine or drill press.” Q “cord of wool”, and Spartley, meaning, “Archer” A tool for wool which will be true as an arrow? Bow and arrow? Adam plays a bow this album, ala Page? Is the wool reference to say reiterate people can be sheep?… Read more »

racked my brain, no idea. My thought also, maybe something with ticks and leeches. I wish his weird riddles were at least half decipherable. Also, did anyone else think Rance Q. Spartley looked a little too familiar? Possible blood relation to Blair? Anytime Tool ponders unchartered territory im happy. Seems they have a lot brewing! Oh but when will it all drop. 2012 was said to be a good year for Tool fans, so far not much. Hopefully a lot of leg work. Tool weaving some new stuff they have never done before. Maybe a new artist they are working with for the album artwork that will be drastically different from previous Alex Grey and others. Even new mutlimedia. 3d goggles was pretty damn creative for album artwork. They gotta do something even more boundary-pushing this go around.

i cant believe he still writes these retarded newsletters. like we dont have better things to do then crack some b.s newsletter. i read some of it but skipped over the parts that just were blah blah blah. the record will come out when it comes out. thats my take on all of this. any real news that seems real ill believe but until then its just the usual annoying b.s! i find it odd that no one has mentioned this ‘bug man’ looks an awful lot like blair does. as in it looks like a brother or a relative… Read more »

Compared to some of the newsletters he’s written in the past, this one doesn’t even qualify as cryptic.

And its been pointed out various times that the man pictured is more than likely Blair over in the forum.

Recording bug noises for a segue? I’d say that’s hardly ‘uncharted territory’ that the band and band management would have numerous concerns over, and warrent bringing in a renowned entomology professor (who doesn’t exist). I think the whole bug thing is just a joke. If you re-read the newsletter, replacing all the bug references with music/recording references, its clear that this guy is some kind of audio genious giving them advice on something, probably to do with the recording of the new album. Also I’m pretty sure that guy in the picture is not Blair…

I wonder if Mr. Spartley was really just Maynard and that was Blair’s way of saying that Maynard had met with the rest of the members. He was in LA shortly before this newsletter was posted so it’s possible.
