Loudwire have a new article online today in which Maynard, Adam and Danny each talk about Undertow on it’s 22nd anniversary. They talk about the album, the motivation behind the band in those days, as well as some further insight into the difficulties they were having with Paul D’Amour at the time:
“Paul really wanted to be a guitar player early on,†Carey says. “Even before we started on Undertow, he wanted to get another bass player in the band so he could play guitar. And we were all just like, ‘There’s no way we’re getting another a–hole in this band to deal with.’ But he really wasn’t happy with things the way they were. And that became more and more apparent over time.â€
It’s an interesting article and worth the read.
It is a good read. I think this is the first time outside of the all Tool issue of Revolver that they mention that Paul was fired, not quit.
Surprised you posted so soon after no doubt celebrating Taylor Walkers strut and a fearful forward press 😉
Loved this album.. I am pretty sure it rewired my brain when I listened to it 40000000 times in a row as a teen.
Tex’s display can only be topped by Tool entering the studio in the near future. Watch this space!
You know something?
I know that Geelong are going to wish they had Walker rather than Dangerfield…
Finally tool and crows combine haha
Glad the Hawks brain trust get to investigate how to beat that ludicrous press by round 12.. but sadly the Crows might all be fitter so it might be even nastier. Either way, who doesn’t love seeing North Melbourne flogged!
finally tool come out with their true personality and ideas. apart from all the images they projected in these years….
wat?
Good read! Wow, i can’t remember where i was 22 years ago… it’s been a long way…
so Paul ” De Amor” wanted to play guitar… and kicked out of Tool…. bad for him, he is a good bass player…. i think he recognize it since he plays it with “Lesser Key”.
Soon?
I thought it was interesting that Maynard was involved in the interview and not Justin?
Justin wasn’t in the band during that time.
kind of weird that Danny called him an a-hole (unless I’m reading it wrong) considering that he’s worked with him recently outside of Tool
I took it more as a way of saying “there are four a-holes in this band already, why do we want to add one more” rather than an insult aimed at Paul.
If this isn’t Tool, does anyone know who it is, because I want to give them all of my money. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRnd5TdINiw
I definitely don’t think it’s Tool but couldn’t tell you who it actually is.
That being said, if you want to get a good progressive metal Tool fix in before the new album drops then check out a band called Soen (and Karnivool if you haven’t already).
@ out…
Stinkfist.
Another band to check out is OF THE I from the UK.
They only had one album, Balance Instars, but it is easily on the same level to anything released by TOOL or KARNIVOOL. I listen to it just as regularly as Lateralus or Sound Awake.
Unfortunately i think they broke up a few years ago. Their website was taken down and you can’t find any current information on them. However, you can still order the CD online.
The song does seem to resemble many of the elements TOOL have been quoted about implementing. But how in the hell does the song have 8 dislikes to 11likes!? That’s not some ho-hum, dime a dozen production from some ‘mediocre at best’ band..
Why are they randomly talking about a 22nd anniversary of Undertow if not to hint at some type of release of it? Does this mean in 2019 we’ll get Aenima’s 23rd anniversary album?
I don’t know
wandering, aimless prog ballads with run-of-the-mill PRS-sounding tone is usually not a hallmark of Tool imo. Listen to the drumming lol
bad song is bad
Just for the record, Tom Hawkins is still better than Tex, and if we continue our current form, I’m not sure Patrick Dangerfield will be so sure about coming home anyway!
I’d rate them about equal at the moment. I don’t think anyone can render final judgement until they’ve finished their careers.
The language coming out of the Dangerfield camp isn’t especially promising. I don’t think he’s made a decision yet though, but if Crows can keep on form then I suspect that’ll make a big impact in his decision. We’ve got a pretty soft draw up until the bye round, so there’s half a chance we’ll be sitting in the top 4 then.
Pretty sure Iv figured out what they are doing! They are just waiting to release a tenth anniversary for 10,000 days! Wouldn’t that be sick!
what’s the significance of the 22nd anni of Undertow?
It’s between the 21st and the 23rd
Some cryptic message on toolband about a closer. Tool, an object to create a lot of smoke with zero fire.
I believe it was a reference to Maynard and his output musically and lyrically.
