Bull shit.

Some bands can fly under the radar for years and release an amazing album at any time.

This sounds like a Ninja band. But definitely not a Pirate band.

Also going by that rule My Bloody Valentine would be out, which makes no sense.

Yeah, I don't think time needs to be a determining factor. I think record sales (of anything other than their current record) is the main criteria I will use.

My main gripe is the number of votes that big bands (Alice In Chains for example) that have released a largely mediocre album (in my opinion) and have polled a bunch of votes simply because they are a popular band. The top 5 so far is full of bands that are now getting close to 20 years old, and not many of these bands I believe have put out great albums.

What I'd like to see is a top 10 where people can look at and say "I haven't really listened to much of that band. Other Tool fans seem to like them so I'll check it out.".

Finally finishes counting the votes - all 230 of them. Going to end up being a top 12, since there were three albums equal 10th. Unsurprisingly, all but one of these 12 artists have been around for at least 10 years each, and even this new band up of long time Fourtheye reader favorites.

Top 12 list will be coming soon, and then a top 10 "non-mainstream" list to come not long after.

Nope, the didn't make the cut. The new band was Palms. Volto also made the list, but despite Incitare being their debut album I'm not inclined to label them as "new"

I haven't actually checked that all of those are 2013 albums to be honest, so there could be a couple of old ones there. The top 12 are all definitely legit 2013 releases though.

And here they are:

Our poll to collect your Top 10 albums has concluded, and I’ve finally counted all 230 votes received! As there were 3 albums tied for 10th spot, I decided this year we shall have a top 12. Voting was quite tight beyond the top 5, with only 1 vote separating the next 15 that didn’t make the cut.

Most of the albums selected were by long standing artists that we’ve all seen or heard of before. There were a wide range of albums voted on, so in the next day or so I shall present a companion list – the top 10 albums from bands you may not have heard of.

Without further ado, here is the list!

12. Palms – Palms
Featuring members of Isis and Deftones, it should come as no surprise that this new super group made Fourtheye’s top 2013 list. While the album was a little mellow for my tastes, this album appealed to a good number of you lot.

11. One Of Us Is The Killer – Dillinger Escape Plan
DEP unleashed another 40 minutes of madness upon us with yet another strong release, taking a step back from the ferocity of the last album and adding in a little more Ire Works style experimentation.

10. Earth Rocker – Clutch
Clutch slowly conquering the world with their high energy rock and great live shows. Earth Rocker may not be their finest album, but it was certainly good enough to grab a bunch of votes in this years poll.

9. Kveikur – Sigur Ros
Not really much I can say about this album, as I haven’t spent much time listening to it, but these Icelandic wizards released their “heaviest” album in a while, which has appealed to many Fourtheye readers.

8. Lightning Bolt – Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam keep on turning out album after album these days. Lightning had a couple of great tracks, in particular Sirens, but other than that didn’t do much for me. Many of you seemed to enjoy it though and it made #8 on the list.

7. Incitare – Volto!
In typical Tool fashion this album seemed to take forever to come out, but when it did listeners were impressed by the high level of musicianship all over the place.

6. Asymmetry – Karnivool
Aussie Prog Rockers have been on many Tool fans radar for some time now, and their long awaited Asymmetry album didn’t disappoint. Personally I really think they could do with a new singer, but the album did have some good tracks on it.

5. The Raven That Refused To Sing (And Other Stories) – Steven Wilson
Wilson put out another collection of old school prog rock mixed with a bit of jazz fusion. Was a little surprised to see this ranking so highly, though I enjoyed the album I didn’t realize his work was quite so popular with Tool fans.

4. 13 – Black Sabbath
The war machine keeps turning as Sabbath put out a long awaited Ozzy Osbourne album that is probably 20 years too late.

3. The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here – Alice In Chains
Alice In Chains released their second album with post-Layne singer William DuVall, and while I personally thought it was a little forgettable, it seems a decent percentage of you guys disagree! Viva la democracy!

2. Hesitation Marks – Nine Inch Nails
2013 was a busy year for 20 year old bands, and even NIN got into the act. They released an album that was considered quite poppy by many, but is liked enough by you guys that it made our top 12. In fact this album and the #1 received far more votes than anything else that reached the top 12.

1. …Like Clockwork – Queens Of The Stone Age
Queens of the Stone Age lost their way a little on their last couple of albums (in my opinion anyway) but with 2013 came Like Clockwork. Sure, it didn’t capture the energy of their earlier works, but the emotion and songwriting rang true with many of you. Over a third of you in fact, with this album being included in 32% of the top 10 lists submitted.

Sabbath is a big surprise to me,as most of the regulars here did not think highly of it (for the record, I liked it, Ozzy's tired old death and doom lyrics actually make more sense now than when he was an invincible young lad) though I did not vote for it in my top 10 either.

As much as I love NIN and even though Hesitation Marks has grown on me, I wouldn't put it top 4.

I'm surprised how high Sabbath, NIN and AIC all polled to be honest. I thought the general consensus was that those albums were disappointing. I think it just comes down to many readers having a somewhat limited range of bands they listen to. I expect Sabbath, AIC, NIN, Pearl Jam and QOTSA all got plenty of votes more due to who they are rather than how good their last album was.

The real surprises for me are how highly the Steven Wilson and Karnivool albums polled.

So onto the top 10 "non-mainstream" artists list.

My thoughts on the elimination process are:
  • Must not have had a Gold album or greater in either Australia, the US or the UK prior to the one being nominated (I pick these three countries as they are the top 3 that fourtheye readers come from).
  • Must not have released more than 3 full length albums (singles & EPs don't count).
  • Shouldn't be in this years (or any other years) Fourtheye Best Of List.
  • Shouldn't contain artists from band who fit the three criteria above (for example Palms or Amok).
Not so sure about that one though, as it would eliminate someone like Bosnian Rainbows who I think probably deserve some recognition.

That was an awful list. I'm glad I didn't vote, too.

To be fair, all that top ten reflects is how lame the releases for 2013 have been - which is something I've maintained for a while.

You know it's a FE top ten when neither SECRET CHIEFS 3 or MELVINS made it.

And did I spy KORN on the list with more than one votes?! Good God.

QOTSA, Sigur Ros, and DEP were in my top 10.

Volto! was in my top 13.

Palms and Clutch were good not great.

AIC, Black Sabbath, and Nine Inch Nails were OK, but not all that compelling. I haven’t really found myself going back to them after the first couple of listens.

I'll probably check out that Karnivool album. I imagine eventually I'll probably check out that Steven Wilson, but I'm in no rush. Don't really give a fuck about Pearl Jam, so I don't think I'll be checking that one anytime soon.

Karnivool was definitely a surprise. I didn't think they were that popular. Wasn't expecting Steven Wilson, but that's mainly just because I forgot about that album.

It may well be an awful list, but by not taking part it becomes more awful. I will be producing a list of albums considered "worse" than the Korn one for your consideration.
