I think the album is good and perhaps (dare I say) the best mix/sound quality yet. Give a listen uncompressed on a decent system. On the first listen "hung on a hook" and "lab monkey" stand out. I'm sure some more will grow on me, as that's how it's always been W/ alice.

bias....long time/early fan

Just got my physical copy and I dig the artwork.  I am still disappointed with the writing.  I built this up too much based on the samples I heard.  To be honest, if this wasn't AIC, I wouldn't be that impressed - it's pretty tame overall - but being AIC, it's even harder to swallow.  Too many rounded edges.  I will agree that the sound is quite good.   I am also a long time fan.

Hung On A Hook is definitely one of the better songs.  Can't fault the sound either, not that I'm a real audiophile.

I hear u for sure. It's a different band now..... A bit too polished? I dont know, i'm gonna give the whole thing a few listens and see how/ if it evolves. Tool and AIC were always in my top 5 of all time. i need some new stuff to listen to that'll hook me like those bands do.

They cut Will loose a bit on that one, and I think it's time. He also co-wrote phantom limb.....a strong track IMO.

And that's another thing that is sorely missed, on both of the post-Layne albums: some ripping Jerry solos.  You're right, he does kill it live, but I miss those signature long melodic guitar solos.  He's one of my favorites, and obviously not because he's a shredder... he's got the slow burn thing nailed.

That's the one thing that stood out for me the most in that track.  Will needs to do more.  Not sure if it's and ego thing, or a confidence thing of what, but while I like Jerry's voice it is kinda one dimensional.

I also wonder if the band is just easing Will in there out of respect to some of the fan base (the no layne, no alice fans) Maybe they're waiting to hear fans say they want that. Kinda doubt it, but just a thought.

I would have thought most fans have been quite vocal about it already.  There's a pretty clear division between those that think they should have ended with Layne.  My opinion is that if you decide to continue, then you give it everything.

I don't mind Will's vocals at all, but really the last two AIC albums could almost have been recorded without him.

Totally agree, and that's why I am disappointed with this new material.  I always thought BGWTB was an obligation (and rightly so) to pay tribute to Layne, and the next one would really see them get back to form.  Uh uh.

I see your point on the studio shit, Jerry is all over them.  Very different story live.  Jerry can't carry AIC vocally alone.  Will is a huge part of their live show.

I like "Hollow", "Stone" and "Phantom Limb" a lot but being they all came out before the album dropped it was a let down. "Voices" is by far the best song I've heard after the first three. I have to revisit it again in a week or so. But I may have been wrong with my initial negative bombardment.

very bad album, very good song. what a disappointment after "Black Gives Way to Blue". I dig "Voices"and "Phantom Limb". "Hollow" is decent but I mean, damn what a fucking drop off. if this was a 4 track EP it would've been solid.

who else is joining them? I love the original AIC and they still do rock live but you MUST pair them with someone else I like for me to be excited to go see them again. like a few years back one of my best friends from high school said "AIC live at MSG" I was like "okay, okay" not too shabby. then he said "yeah and Mastodon and the Deftones are opening up, is Mastodon any good?" I didn't even answer I just fucking ran for my wallet to get my card out. they should hook up with Soundgarden or even dare I say, Faith No More. that would be a pants swelling show right there son!

Are they still playing Staley vocals during their songs? If they aren't, they should be. As much a I love AIC the new dude just isn't Layne

he is a cool ass dude though, sounds great live. very good voice, different than Layne but it's powerful.

They were when I saw them last year. I wish they'd do a proper Oz tour rather than just festivals.
