They shouldn't be using the name Opeth.

Exactly! But I wasn't calling you out. I was responding and letting you know I didn't share the opinion. You know, a discussion?

We can do that, so let's continue to do that. Besides, it will piss off the trolls that we can have a reasonable discussion without name calling.

So, about the vocals... elaborate. How do you perceive them differently than previous clean vocal Opeth tracks? It's not like it's the first time he's used that style.
I don't know they just got on my nerves pretty quick and stayed there. I've heard the song a couple more times but it doesn't change.

I know you weren't calling me out I just found it weird that only my negative review got any attention.

As mentioned above, I just wanted to engage with you on it. Why bother with the other regulars? It usually goes nowhere. (for the most part - don't get your panties in a bunch the rest of ya, you know it's true.)

The music does have it's moments so I have hope for the album overall.

In what way? The current Guitarist and Drummer are excellent. Are you saying Martin and Peter were significant contributors to the writing? I don't really think that was the case... Amazing players as well, I'm not taking anything away from them.

I don't share that opinion. Listening (and enjoying) GR now, coincidentally.

BTW, both Martin and Peter were on that album...

I just don't like the direction they (he) went in, it's as simple as that.

That's just my opinion

Opeth had potential until they got stuck using tri-tones, dull and predictable song writing formulas (soft, heavy, soft heavy), and using cookie cutter pentatonic scales.
The fanboys love referring the use of A barchord and augemented B barchord riffs as being epic. Ya-FUCKING-wn

Even hardcore Opeth fans agree that lead guitar lacks technical aspects found in other progressive music. Barchords are not technical.

Opeth has become a cliche. I think it's constructive criticism to say that even the acoustic guitar playing lacks any emotion. Damnation is full of it. Quite honestly much of the catalogue seems unfocused to me. Rushed and disjointed. Many songs off Watershed have so many uninteresting transitions that make no sense. Here is some constructive criticism. The bass could be more prominent as I feel it's just 'there to be there'. Åkerfeldt writing style lacks innovation. Martin Lopez is a better than average drumer, but there is still much to be desired. Mike has said himself that he isn't much of a vocalist, so that's not an opinion but rather fact.

As with most bands, there will always be hardcore fanboys/apoligist who will blindly follow and flame anyone who disagrees (sound familiar M0G..you shit on Tool fans but god forbid if they have constructive criticism towards a band that you jerk off to) and those that are casual fans or just all together think the band sucks.

Good post. Well written. Sound logic. I don't agree with you of course on any level but that is irrelevant. A good post is a good post.

However, I did notice that you bothered to create an avatar directed at me, specifically with my name in it. That means on some level I have gotten to you. I get off on that shit. It means I win. I got what I wanted. Thank you. Next.

RARE OPETH PICTURE FROM 2004!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Image

This was taken after a band meeting when they all decided that tri tones sound really fucken awesome as well as agreeing to rid the music of any real technical skill so any acne faced grease head with mommys credit card can go down to the local guitar shop, buy a shitty ass guitar, de tune it, crank up the distortion and play some SERIOUS FKN LOLMETAL!

For realz yo.

That upload was terrible. Volume was crazy low. I dig the song though. This is definitely going to be a prog rock album.
