King Buzzo @ Enigma Bar 13-Aug-2014

First leg of King Buzzo's acoustic tour in Oz happened to be Adelaide, and I was lucky enough to be there. The Enigma Bar is a reasonably small venue, I'd have estimated the crowd at less than 200. Unlike Neurosis' show last week, the venue and crowd size were just right, with enough people to fill the room, yet still leaving enough space to chill out without feeling crowded.

Blackie from the Hard-Ons was the support act, and while we relaxed on a sofa with a couple of beers he did his thing - a collection of what laid back tunes, some which may or may not have been Hard-Ons tracks. It was enjoyable, but not especially engaging either.

When he was done, there was the briefest of stage change overs (only about 10 minutes) and Buzz made his way out. He started off with an acoustic version of Boris. I was in heaven. He continued with a set that was about mostly Melvins tracks, with several of his solo album songs as well (and one Alice Cooper cover I didn't recognise). Highlights included Revolve and Evil New War God. His solo stuff came across quite well live - I enjoyed them more than I did on the album.

The sound was great, which should be expected when you only have one guitar and vocals to mix. Buzz roamed the stage, getting right in the face of those lucky enough to be in the front row - quite often playing just centimetres away from the patrons faces. He was vocally quite loud, but also quite dynamic in the way he used his voice. This ain't some kind of sit down on a stool and strum some chords type show - he treated it with the same kind of gusto he would a Melvins gig.

As many of us know, he is quite a humorous man, cracking jokes between songs and interacting with the crowd. As expected, he told a story as part of his set. Tonight we got the Mike Patton/Mr Bungle shitting on the audience story.

Overall, a great night and a memorable unique gig. I don't expect Buzz will be doing many of these tours, so my advice is to check it out if/when it hits your town - you may never get a chance to see him play in a similar intimate setting.

Obligatory shitty phone photo:

Thanks for the write-up. What time was he on-stage? Going to Melb show tomorrow night.

Blackie was on just after 9pm, and then Buzz on pretty much right on 10pm. The changeover between sets was less than 10 minutes though, so when Blackie finishes, take that as your cue to get a decent spot.

DOORS DON'T OPEN AT DING DONG UNTIL 9, SO I PRESUME EVERYTHING WILL BE A TOUCH LATER

Absolutely Hellboy has it covered. Dynamic is the perfect description of his vocal. The vocal was what most impressed me I think. I knew he could play guitar (he's awesome)but I loved his strong vocal. He also made me laugh out loud. His standup was brilliant!

A fabulous gig!I had some misgivings that King Buzzo wouldn't translate into an acoustic set but he did in spades.

Thanks for the status update Tyson I hope you enjoy.

Pete - I'd love to share one of these moments with you some day.

Pimple - Enjoy mate. It is a memorable gig

Glad you enjoyed the show, Hellboy! I was pleasantly surprised at how animated he was on stage. Tue Mike Patton story cracked me up. I'd heard it before, but not the back story.

You tease. I bet you left your number with Cal as well!

Is there an Iggy Pop story does anyone know?

Yes, SF got the Iggy story. I mentioned it I believe.

Buzz prowled the stage. It was funny and awesome. I would definitely go again, but am not optimistic the opportunity will present itself.

Whoops. I did read your review Kittaan honestly.

There was a definate crowd bias towards hearing the Patton story in Adelaide.

Oh and did you hear? Danny is touring with Primus.

Buzz gave us a "choice" but told us he had already decided on Iggy.

It was hilarious.

What was the Patton/Bungle story, if you please?

Buzzo also added that Patton didn't even recall the incident. :)

He did "the goat" then pissed on the crowd.

I got the impression he shat on the crowd. There is a copy of the show on Dimeadozen.

Yeah, I think Buzz embellishes the story a little but - I don't think it was 30 minutes of white noise as he describes.

Ah, I thought he actually stuck his dick up his ass. What you're saying is probably more likely.
