King Buzzo @ Ding Dong Lounge 15-Aug-2014

Started the evening tipping back a few 'goats' at the Section 8 beer garden a few blocks away before walking over to the venue with my No. 1.

Ding Dong is a pretty small place (maybe 300 capacity) and the perfect kind of venue for this type of gig. I knew going in the sound would be solid having previously seen Lanegan do his solo thing there. The post-fire/rebuilt Ding Dong certainly doesn't have the same sticky floor character as the original, but it's still a generally enjoyable place.

Buzz was in great form as to be expected. Vocals were killer and quite dynamic as stated already. And I loved the way he hammered the acoustic. This wasn't some fucking kumbaya around the camp fire shit ... this was still a rock show ... CHUNCKY is the best word I could use to describe the playing. It was a very fresh performance.

Good mix of Melvins tunes and solo, which all came across fantastically in this setting, from the opening notes of Boris. Parked just at the stage left end of the fairly low stage, I was essentially stuck in shit-eatin-grin mode as Buzz waltzed about the stage, periodically stopping to crunch a few chords inches from my eyeballs.

I managed a couple minutes of video from Boris since I wanted to fiddle with my new gadget, but beyond that, I couldn't be fucked for the rest of the night.

(apologies for the 'swaying vid, I accidentally let youtube fix the 'shaky' and this is what I get for it)

We got the Patton story, also, and he was well animated as I expected. Knowing he was going to tell one of three stories, all of which were only vaguely familiar (I've made an effort to not watch/read the details) and not having actually seen any of them, I found it quite humorous. Love the whole, 'don't know shit about FNM' and 'who is this playing the worst cover of war pigs ever', schtick.

Quote of the night came while he was quipping on about his home life and his wife busting his balls: "We don't believe in divorce in our house. Someone's gonna die and it's winner take all".

All in all, worth every penny I spent on the night and if I wasn't previously inclined to do other things this eve, I'd consider attendance again tonite.

EDIT: another highlight worth a mention was Hooch ... not sure if Adelaide got it or not, but it sure was nice to get a track from my favorite Melvins record.

I can't even pretend to hold this back: That was fucking amazing. "Boris" acoustic?! Fuck me in the ass as hard as you can.

Holy fucking Christ. I can't believe that, one, this is actually a thing (The King doing acoustic solo); and two, that it owns so hard.

I am so happy that you guys got to see this. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the aforementioned Regal Overlord Of All That Is Riffage And Good, so it makes me so glad knowing you guys got to catch this.

This is special.

I will say, though, that if YOB do Australia and not Auckland, I'll have nothing but bad words to say to anyone that catches a show.

Agreed on the "WORST COVER OF WAR PIGS EVER" bit.

I mean...really.

Thanks for the review. We did get Hooch, from memory the final two songs of the set were Hooch & Revolve.

Glad you had a great time. It was definitely one of the best shows of the year. Sideshow Bob knows how to rock an acoustic.
