I definitely dug it and agree it was just a slow buildup for what's to come.

I'll be traveling for the first couple weeks in August. Hope I can find a way to keep watching in MX.

I thought the first few episodes were pretty predictable. Getting better as the season wraps up though.

I'm sure it is, but that's off topic for this thread, and I ain't got time for another TV show.

I thought it was ok. Hopefully, they got the foundation established and the remaining eps will bring it home.

I am glad they pulled off the Jon=Aegon band-aid quickly. Sets the stage for a clash of dragons.

I was fine with the first episode I figured it would play out much as it did. There is quite a lot they had to set up for the remainder of the season and as Tiresias mentioned getting the Jon/Aegon situation out quickly was a good move. All the groundwork stuff is laid out and they can now move forward with the big shit. All the pieces are on the board and now we see how it all plays out.

I have mentioned it before, but George R. R. Is the Tool of SciFi/Fantasy. That fat lazy bastard still hasn’t delivered his next book. I seriously doubt the HBO series ending will make it into the books. How fucking lame would that be?

Do you mean he'll die before he ends the series? Or that he's just going to end up having a different ending for the books than the show?

I don't see why the show and books need to have the same ending...

I don't see why they would have radically different endings. No doubt there will be differences, but there already is between books and TV show.

Martin mentioned there will be some significant differences but they are working off his official outline in terms of the general ending so I do agree with Hellboy. When Martin and HBO made the initial agreement he had to provide them the ending in case he past away. There have already been some very big differences between the books and the show but again, in terms of the actual ending, it will be pretty much spot on.

As for the books I couldn't give two shits at this point. Martin lost the story entirely with A Feast for Crows and never found his way back on track with A Dance with Dragons. The show has done a fantastic job of cutting out the unnecessary filler and keeping the story arcs moving forward. I never in my life thought I would say this but the TV Show is better than the books. Given how good the first three books were, it is almost shocking to me how far off course book 4 and 5 went. It should be required study material in any university level creative writing class on what not to do when writing a large multi-volume story.

The reality of the situation is this story could have easily been told in 5 books. Martin has an incredible amount of talent but like many authors he has a problem with getting in his own way. I love large epic fantasy stories but too often they become too large for their own good. Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series is a fantastic example of this. A ten book series that after awhile read more like a study in anthropology than an actual work of epic fantasy. All the world building and flowery prose means nothing if you lose the story in the process.

Yeah, a fair bit of cruft between a Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. I guess some can't get enough of the world, but for me they were both pretty tedious reads compared to the first three.

Really loved last night's episode. Brianne being knighted was a nice touch. Hope Jon and Dany can still make it (don't give a shit she is really his aunt it is a fantasy story set in an medieval style period so zero fucks given on that entire issue. Was a common thing back in medieval times and in GoT a regular thing with the Targaryen's and Valyrian's before....obviously not right by our standards today figured i would get that entire thing out of the way before someone chimed in with something stupid)

Sneaky suspicion though now that Dany knows Jon has a claim to the throne she actually might be the one to stick a knife in him and I can't really say I blame her given everything she has been thru trying to claim the Iron Throne. Besides I doubt either of them are going to make it. Really can't wait to see how the Knightking/Bran confrontation is going to play out since that is the centerpiece of the conflict. When Bran said to Jaime how do you know there will be an afterward I started wondering about time lines since Martin has already played with this once with Bran and Hodor.

Wow Mog. Good points all around. I’m still holding out hope for RR to pull his enormous head out of his ginormous ass cheeks and deliver the rest of the books someday to redeem himself... but I’m also holding out hope for a new Tool album someday. Funny that Tool will likely come through, at least eventually. Wouldn’t have called that one 13 years ago.

Completely agree with you on Erickson. Coincidentally, I finally just boxed up all 10 volumes I mostly hunted down at used bookstores over the past years, fully intending to read them all. I had book 5 on my nightstand for literally years before giving up. What a disappointment. To Goodwill with them all. Let someone else slog through that mess.

As for Ep 2, Lot’s of emotional strings tied up in neat bows. So glad the Winterfell battle will start Ep 3, I was worried they would drag that to the finale. I’m much less pessimistic after seeing this one.

Imagine if the first two tracks from 10,000 Days that were released was Lipan Conjuring and Vignati Tres. Hopefully now with the sentimental rubbish out the way they can actually start moving forward a couple of plot points.

Surprised no one has commented yet on the Long Night episode. I have mixed feelings. Many have complained about the lighting but I enjoyed that part it created a fantastic vibe. I do have issue with the way the Night King was taken out. I have no problem with Ayra being the one to take the killing blow but there were so many plot issues and absolutely no pay off in terms of Jon and the Night King. Bran literally just fucking sat there. No further back story or information as to what the Night King was about or planning just Ayra flying out of nowhere and knife in the gut and all the dead fall. All these years leading up to that moment it was far too anti-climatic.

Another issue I have is them taking out the Knight King now and eliminating that entire threat so quickly just leaves the Cersei confrontation which is far less interesting to me. Obviously I am still going to watch it just to see how it ultimately plays out but I have a sneaky feeling much of what went down in the Long Knight episode was likely changed quite a bit from what Martin intended.

I agree with most of what you say, it now just seems like the inevitable fight to see if Jon or Dany is king or queen. There is speculation that what Bran did while luring in the Night King will be elaborated on in a future episode. That there wasn't more explanation around what he and Arya were doing in the leadup to the assassination seems suspicious, and I suspect that's not all she (he) wrote.

I'm in the same boat. The visuals were amazing, and it had many intense moments, but god damn if the plot armor wasn't rampant. Like come on, this is the Night King. Kill off some mains damnit. I don't think the show runners are as balsy as Martin, which kind of sucks. I did like Arya's little moment though, and I feel like Bran and other elements will be elaborated on. It's just a shame that we're moving onto Cersei and what not now. Hopefully they'll introduce some more mystery and magic in these last few episodes that can somehow rival the Night King, but I'm skeptical.

I was disappointed that only C grade characters seemed to get killed. Given the mayhem of the battle, and that it was a very near loss, to see that all the A listers made it through more or less unscathed is a little boring.
