Yes, I'm left-leaning with a concern for social welfare and the environment.

We can't all be mindless drones like you, sweetheart.

Thankyou Mr Costello, for so eloquently summing everything that is wrong with Kevin Rudd and his bungled leadership and sorry excuse for a political party with such accuracy it's almost scary:

Costello rips apart Rudd with unparalleled precision

Talk about hammers hitting nails where it counts most!

Wow, a former Liberal leader gets stuck into the current Labour PM during an election. What a shock!

In the meantime a Nobel Prize winner for Economics seems to think we're doing ok. Not sure why the Libs think our economy is some kind of flaming wreck.

If you are satisfied with going from a surplus of 80 billion (when the Liberals stepped down) to a deficit of 300 billion in only six years then more power to you.

If you are also satisfied with a preening self promoter who will base his policies on a thought he had while brushing his teeth (without even running by his own cabinet) only to abandon said policy months later....then please, by all means vote for the four eyed piece of shit.

Not one OUNCE of business acumen in the entire Labor Party. Social reform? Environmental concern? This is a party who couldn't instigate a fucking pink batts policy, walked away and abandoned a 500 million dollar Greens Loans scheme and is now scrapping a carbon tax that was supposedly the "great moral challenge of our time".

The guy's a fucking fruit cake. Honestly, I'd vote for Humphrey Bear over this clown and his bunch of left wing socialist academic latte drinkers, union hacks and ex student activists.

Anyway, only a few days to go before we haul out the rubbish.

Carry on.....

Seems like Kevin isn't out just yet, declaring to oppose Abbutt's mandate of abolishing the carbon price.

So it looks like even if Abbutt wins the election, which seems likely, he will get repealed in the senate and then, if he has the guts, will have to call a double dissolution election.

This gunna be good.

Same shit, different assholes. No arguments there. I also agree Rudd is a wanker, but then again I can't think of a single election I've voted in where the leaders aren't complete fuckbags. Calling Rudd a self promoter and fruit cake is pretty rich when Abbott is leading the other side.

Reading anything other than Murdoch owned media seems to suggest Labour have done a decent job with the economy. If you want to keep on believing what the Daily Telegraph tells you, then more power to you.

You have no arguments from me about scrapping the carbon tax - it was a weak move by Labour that has largely backfired imo.

Agreed. I'm no Abbott fanboy - more like a Rudd detractor.

The only thing - THE ONLY THING - that saved the Rudd government was that China kept buying their coal.

Surpluses are horrible for most indexes of well-being and life-satisfaction. Even the HDI would balk at the concept of NOT having remaining money spent on education and health.

http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/hdi/

Writing a paper about this tomorrow, so the timing was excellent.

Business acumen has a lot to do with both earning money, and knowing how to wisely spend it. Not just horde it while one in seven Australians suffer through poverty.

I'm willing to let political debates take their courses when it comes to people I know, as there's not much point holding someone's political views too strongly against them - but yet again, you've proven yourself to be an utter infant when it comes to thinking, and lacking the kind of forward-focus and capacity for integrated concepts that would make you worthy of being conversed with.

In short: make your vote, shut the fuck up, and got to Hell.

Hey, don't be unfair here. They don't want to horde it, they just want to make sure the upper and middle classes get their cut...

The selfishness is see from some of my middle class bogan friends is pretty disturbing these days. As long as I can get a 5 bedroom mini-mansion and another 10 inmches on my TV I don't give a fuck about anyone else.

As with most countries, Australia's "underclass" perceives things relatively. Tyson made a comment years ago about how if someone doesn't have a flat-screen TV in every room, they feel that they are "poor", or the "underclass". It's true, for many reasons. One is that Australia has an incredibly high standard of living: the Gini index reflects that, as do most indexes of well-being. (Note that I would never use real GDP or real GNI. While they're great indicators of economic robustness, if you will, they're terrible at demonstrating just how Australians feel about their position in society.)

Australia's self-satisfaction is so high, in fact, that we're consistently giving more and more, altruistically, as the years go by. Charities have, for the most part, experienced a steady upwards stretch when it comes to dragging money out of Aussie's pockets.

So, while your point was (anecdotally, at least from my experience) correct, I don't think middle-Australia is as tight-fisted as we think. The real income disparity and disconnect with reality, as always, lies with your crust 10%.

Talk about hammers hitting nails where it counts most!
Since the carbon tax has been in.... – Real GDP has risen by 1.9 per cent in the three quarters of available data (annualised growth rate of 2.5 per cent).
– Employment has risen by 157,400 people in 11 months, made up of 76,300 new full-time jobs and 81,000 part-time jobs.
– The unemployment rate has edged up to 5.5 per cent in May 2013 from 5.3 per cent in June 2012, just before carbon was priced.
– The stock market (ASX200) has risen by more than 17 per cent, adding approximately $205 billion to the value of Australian shares. A further $50 billion or so of dividends have been paid to shareholders since June 30, 2012.
– According to RP Data, house prices have risen 3.9 per cent since June 30, 2012, adding approximately $160 billion to the wealth of owners of houses.
– In terms of inflation, the CPI has risen by 2 per cent in three quarters (annualised pace of 2.6 per cent), a figure which includes the boost to prices from the carbon price driven lift in electricity and gas prices. Underlying inflation has risen 1.7 per cent in the nine months (annualised pace of 2.2 per cent) and this figure has also been inflated by the carbon price.
– The wages price index has risen by 2.2 per cent in nine months (annualised pace of 3 per cent), locking in a period of moderate wage increases.
– The value of retail sales has risen by 1.6 per cent in the 10 months to April.
– The number of new motor vehicle sales has risen by 1.6 per cent in 11 months, with a new monthly record high for car sales registered in December 2012.
– The number of dwelling building approvals has fallen 3.1 per cent since June but the number of new housing loans for owner occupation has risen 7 per cent over the same period.
– The NAB measure of business conditions has fallen from -1 points in June to -4 points in May, but business confidence has risen from -3 points to -1 point over the same timeframe.
– The Westpac measure of consumer sentiment has risen by 6.9 per cent since June 2012.
– The Reserve Bank index of commodity prices has fallen 7.5 per cent in Australian dollar terms since June and has fallen 8.1 per cent in US dollar terms.
– The Reserve has cut the official cash rate from 3.5 per cent to 2.75 per cent.
– The 10-year government bond yield has risen a net 70 basis points to 3.75 per cent as of Monday’s close.
– The Australian dollar has fallen around 10 per cent as the market has adjusted to the global influence of lower commodity prices and interest rate cuts.
At the same time, Australia’s triple-A credit rating from all three ratings agencies remains unchallenged. So there you go. Decent economic growth, job creation at a steady pace, a strong stock market, moderate house price gains, rising wealth and real wages for the household sector, low inflation, falling interest rates, steady business conditions and strengthening consumer sentiment. And all of this with China weaker than expected a year ago, the eurozone in a deep and protracted recession, an overvalued Australian dollar

I couldn't be more happy with a falling Aussie dollar.

Is stock market profit usually added when calculating the GDP?

GDP = private consumption + gross investment + government spending + (exports − imports)

I guess it would fall under gross investment.

But I'm no economics major.

I thought it would be gross investment. Just wasn't sure how much of it would be owned and created offshore, and hence not able to be included in GDP.

Thanks.

Going to be a long night. Got Australia vs Brazil at 4:00am on Sunday morning.

The coverage of the election on the ABC site has been pretty good so far, and personally that would be the first stop for me: http://www.abc.net.au/news/federal-elec ... -coverage/

I'll be out camping in the middle of no where, so zero fucks will be given by me until I get back to civilisation and see that Tony is most likely in power.
