Best Live Albums

Post by UndKeineZwEier »

Don't think we've ever had a discussion about this before, so let's share:

Band of Gypsies - Jimi Hendrix
It's kind of a cliche, but this is the album I turn to when I need some cheering up. It just makes me feel good.

Gary Clark Jr. Live
Gary Clark Jr's studio stuff is not always the best, but everything comes together real well live. This is maybe my most listened to live album.

East & West - Bill Frisell
Bill Frisell is probably my favorite guitar player and the West side of this double album really showcases the qualities which makes him such a unique player.

Agharta & Pangaea - Miles Davis
Technically two albums, but I'm grouping them together because they're both from the same festival. Agharta was a recording of a midday set, and Pangaea was from the night set. The last albums Miles put out before he quit music in 1975 (he returned in the '80s), and some of the nastiest, funkiest shit I've ever heard.

Live in Cook County Jail - B.B. King
Not a whole lot to say about this, but it's great and a lot of fun.

Roxy & Elsewhere - Frank Zappa
This album is worth checking out for those who maybe haven't been able to get into Frank Zappa before. I think his weirdness comes across better live than on record. This album is a lot of fun, and I still crack up at a lot of the bits.

Yessongs
Yes - bunch of excellent musicians on stage at once playing well together

Director's Cut Live
Fantomas - I wish Mike provided wav's of the show instead of just mp3 kaka.

-Are live shows recorded to analog medium anymore? Do they use DATs or is it all digitally recorded with high sampling rates?

It's all digital nowadays. Some people might still do analog but I think it's almost all just being done with a laptop now.

Primus - Suck on this (short but sweet)
Led Zeppelin - How the west was won
Mammal - the aural underground (considering this was recorded live in one sitting after the band had only been gigging a few months is testament to their strength as a live act
Metallica - Live shit binge and purge. (Heavy black album setlist and over indulgent at times but tell me you didnt at some point all own and crank this)
Nirvana - unplugged in new york

Sepultura - Under A Pale Grey Sky is an awesome live album

Speaking of Unplugged, Alice in Chains is the best of that series, possibly even their best album
