I dunno, but the band were present for this in previous releases.UndKeineZwEier wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:22 pm I'm not entirely sure why, if the album was being mastered this week, that would mean Danny couldn't play at the Baked Potato?
The band doesn't really need to be there for that part of the process.

Re: Random Tool Social Media thread
How long is the mastering process? Is it simply combining all of the different "tracks" that were layered during mixing?
I'll Google it immediately after I post this ... But I don't really know the difference between mixing and mastering.

Re: Random Tool Social Media thread
My laymans understanding is that:
- Mixing is where the levels of all the channels are set (how high the vocals are in the mix, etc)
- Mastering is setting the levels and such for pressing the record to a given media (CD, vinyl, etc)
I'd have expected mastering might be a like a week or something?

Coolest part:
Ludwig, Barresi and the band listened through 800-pound Eggleston Works Ivy Speakers that are actually seated down to bedrock

Also worth noting is that it was the February 2006 where the corresponding mastering for 10000 Days was noted in a Tool Newsletter:
https://www.toolband.com/news/newslette ... ruary-2006
So the schedule so far is not hugely different from that of 13 years ago.

Re: Random Tool Social Media thread
Any idea what Easter eggs they could be referring to on past albums?
Hahahahaha "digital projects"Each of Tool's albums has hidden tracks or sonic Easter eggs for the listener to discover. “Yeah, there's things on this record,” Barresi reveals. “There are two in particular that are very interesting. One was a piece that Adam had worked on. We put it together while we were at mastering and in the hotel room the night before. We kind of tweaked it more the following day with effects, arranging and stuff.”
And with 96k, 24-bit masters, we're ready for any kind of high-resolution digital projects.”

One of the easter eggs is Timmy from South Park during Right in Two

Re: Random Tool Social Media thread
That's about accurate. It's also a chance to catch and fix any problems that slipped through the mixing stage. It's a lot of really subtle and requires highly trained ears to do well. It's not the kind of thing you would want a band standing over your shoulder while you're doing it. I'm guessing Tool just hangs out in New York and is checking with Bob when he finishes a song or something.hellboy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2019 9:49 pmMy laymans understanding is that:I'm sure UKE has a better explanation.

Ohhhhh. Sweet! Ludwig’s mastering studio is in Portland, ME. I get it. Hot damn! Speakers resonating bedrock. Stoked.

So none of us truly know how great any record really sounds because we haven't heard it out of these speakers. Goddamn I wanna hear how those sound. So jealous of Tool lolhellboy wrote: ↑Mon Mar 04, 2019 9:54 pm Relevant reading: https://www.mixonline.com/recording/mak ... ays-365657

I suspect the band just delivers the tapes, hangs out with them for a bit, and then checks in semi-regularly to see what's going on. Presumably they all listen together once it's done for final sign off.UndKeineZwEier wrote: ↑Tue Mar 05, 2019 6:37 amIt's not the kind of thing you would want a band standing over your shoulder while you're doing it. I'm curious as to how far along the packaging is for the album, cd, cassette....whatever formats they release in.
