Yeah, I agree.

Culling voices is the song that brings the feeling of the once invincible warrior, who took the test against fear and found his pneuma, takes the descending path in the abyss. Thus in deepest dungeon it are the Culling Voices that try to stop him. And in 7empest the final battle against the deceiver takes place.

Thus, yes, Culling Voices has the perfect tone and placement on the album.

Is this where the nano guitar was used possibly? If that wasn't something made up by Blair that is..

i think you're on to something here, Maynard told in an interview like a year or two ago about his book, that he was reading again Joseph Campbell's Hero with a thousand faces and that it had a great impact on him...
i really like your ideas here, and after reading it, Culling Voices had a different, cinematic climax with the descendant hero founding his strenght and vision and break through forces of culling voices, yeah, i dig it, also Descending for me was society or the world descending but i was too literally following the lyrics, never thought of it as a part of the hero's journey and descending to the underworld again, tired warrior with old tricks (as maynard and the band generally) but because of its just the fate of the warrior he has to connect/remember/recognise/re-call pneuma and after the tempest bring back the fear inoculum (as the holy grail or whatever) as a hero brings back something for us to remember and rejuvenate life
i really start to look at this album in a different light, cheers mate

(also i'm into the reverse order and alternative tracklist kind of stuff now, and i like to see this album as rubic cube segments of a hero journey that you can play with)

this fucking band....i really think they made their Wall (with potential for a movie)

Culling Voices is the most APC song I have heard out of Tool. Also, for about a week I thought CV was one of the "experimental" tracks and was skipping it.

I've doubled and tripled the length, but nothing seems to work.

I think it is likely that this song remains my least favourite on the record for years to come, but once in a while I find myself so intrigued by it while listening. People say 7empest has shades of Opiate/Undertow and while that's true, on the whole it really is a mixed bag of a lot of the things they've done throughout the years.

Culling Voices, on the other hand, sounds to me like a sort of unexplored evolutionary branch of the band's sound. Sort of like what would have happened if the band kept on their trajectory post-Undertow but with like...a few dozen less acid trips.

I find it a compelling song because in many ways it is one of the most straightforward songs they have done in a while. A real "songwriter" type situation. I suppose we had The Pot on 10k Days which fulfilled a similar function and maybe Ticks & Leeches in that it is this less exploratory and more aggressive sounding track. Still, this feels different. Like Undertow with all of the lessons in restraint they've learned since.

She's definitely the weakest track on the album but man that bass tone and riff itself when it drops is magic.

too standard and boring. i think i literally listened to it once all the way thru and im pretty sure it wasnt on the first listen either.

Pneuma is the go to one for me. Invincible was my fav and its still prob the best example of the album imo but Pneumas my go to tune these days and i cant see that changing for awhile. its freakin awesome live too. wait till you hear that one at the show. pheew!

nah, ive listened to it more then once but never all the way through. i mostly skip it cause anytime i try,the words, the music, it just sucks! ha. dont like it.

i kinda got more into Descending lately too. once i read the lyrics it gets me more into it. Invincible, pneuma, total favs. FI,title track works better live. i dont really listen to it but at the show it made more sense, its a good opener.

Lately I have had some longer car trips and time flows differently while listening fear Inoculum during driving and Culling Voices then becomes pretty Grand just after the phenomenal Descending but before the madness of CCtrip and 7empest.

Yeah, I remove all the parts between 0:00 and 10:07.

It's by some margin the worst track on the album (segues aside). I love Fear Inoculum, Pneuma, Invincible, Descending and 7empest to varying degrees, enough at least that I'd rarely skip over them. CV is a couple of notches below any of these tracks.

That's not to say it's without merit though - I do quite enjoy the first third of the track, and the parts where the bass starts working it's way in. I just find the climatic riff and heavy sections to be super bland, and probably some of the laziest writing Tool has done in decades.

Yeah it's definitely several rungs below the rest for sure and I see what ya mean with the climax riff. I guess just my abnormal love for bass just saves the song for me compared to others on here.

And Bob, fuck no! I've already got a copy of the CD. I'm guessing people that would want both are either those who didn't wanna fork out or missed out on the expanded edition or serious collectors.

I don't really skip it, but it's my least favorite on the album easily. The lyrics are seriously atrocious. Melodically, not that interesting but I think it briefly works in the 4:57-5:20 section. As the song starts to get heavier, I like it more but feel let down that it fails to take off, especially vocally. Have to agree that it feels like a lazy effort, half-baked.

I've deleted Maynard's & Adam's segues on my playlist but to skip an actual Tool track?

Sacrilege.

Plus I really like the song, flows really well, how the fuck is it straight forward tompie?

Well there you go,Tyson is restoring some sanity to this thread. Skipping tracks indeed.

I'd love to hold my lighter up (well I'd need to buy one specially) to Culling Voices next year. Its a part of the whole and works for me.

TBH... I've been finding myself skipping it too lately...
It's not a particularly bad song... It's just not a great one. & when Tool set the bar so high, their 'lesser' tracks are damn noticeable.
I remember thinking a bit the same of Right in 2.

I never skip a Tool song. I'm fan of all their work and so culling voices will do it for me. They made a nice creepy tension build up in this song.
