KFAD is easily my least favorite Faith No More album, behind even Album of the Year......it was a major step back into being a more generic "eclectic" album. Instead of really saying anything bold, it was more like a boring mix tape of styles with the familiar mike patton voice and roddy boddum keyboard sound. The guitars were completely generic, faceless alt-rock.
They lost that on King for a Day. Dumb horn sections and funk/soul on star AD. Keyboardless alt rock on digging the grave with insincere sounding vocal performance.
this is almost the kind of musical eclecticism that would appeal to Dave Matthews band fans, meaning variety = good.
what a fucking letdown.
Agreed. Glad somebody else thinks this way as I'm tired of listen to Patton-heads repeatedly trying to defend this weak as piss release.
What I liked so much about Angel Dust was that it was SO BIG!! Big, arena filling keyboard driven funk/metal/weirdo music. It was snide and hateful, achingly beautiful, surreal and nightmarish. Lyrically it was insane and cryptic - just check out the lyrics for both Jizzlobber and Caffeine for the full wtf treatment. It was smart. It was heavy. It was addictive.
Cue three years later. They've lost their guitarist and now apparently also their mojo. As you stated - such a fucking letdown. My jaw literally dropped on the floor only three minutes into Get Out. What the fuck was this. Patton shout/singing awfully dull lyrics over some dumbass 90's alt metal riff. Where were the keyboards? Where was the cryptic nonsensical gibberish I loved so much? Instead we got a pastiche of "safe" sounding, cleanly produced 90's alternative radio rock. Some cocktail lounge bullshit, some faux rage hardcore workouts. Some (dull and boorish) metal anthems. Some bossa nova and some latin jazz. A yawn inducing ballad about giving up alcohol. A gospel choir and lyrics about watching the stars come out. Some REALLY bad lyrics ("...take it from our drummer Puff, being good gets you stuff", "don't let me die with a silly look in my eyes").
I'd almost prefer Peeping Tom.
And ditto for Soundgarden's Superunknown album, for more or less all the same reasons. Also a major let down.

To be fair, peeping tom was amazing live, probably in my top 5.
I had no idea what was going on, Melbourne 2007, smoking a joint with a racist bouncer, shit was the best.

Just discovered this YouTube channel KidsInterviewBands where two girls interview bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Skeletonwitch, Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, Ghost, Melvins, Baroness, Royal Thunder, and Clutch. It's pretty interesting.
paint your lips with blood
and clean your eyes
you've stripped away the skin
babe frothing at the teeth
carry him to me, his blood like cream
