A couple of weeks ago they broadcast that song and three other new tracks from a live studio session they filmed. It was awesome. Bring on the no-vocals, I say. Agreed on all points. There are still those awesome SW moments sprinkled in the album so I don't think it is bad. He definitely had a theme and he wanted to explore it. I am with you on him sticking to his guns and making albums he wants to make. Most of the time the net result is a win for us. The two factors that come to mind:
1) SW is extremely prolific and unwilling to compromise his artistic vision for what others might want to hear. He takes risks and follows his muse. Eventually, you're going to have some of your loyal fans not dig a particular direction that takes you. Perfectly valid, and I hope he doesn't alter this.
2) This is the only one of his solo efforts I wasn't able to see supported live, and I'm sure that would influence my opinion. He is one of the best live acts I've ever seen, and that's coming from someone who has been seeing live shows consistently for 4 decades now. (or if you ask RP, it's been more like 6 decades).
Whether or not this was a lull in his output, or I just didn't get where he was going, I have nothing but respect for what he does, and can't wait to A) see him live again and B) see what comes next.
