Not one comment in this thread is sellin' this shit.
I'm not even going to pirate it.
I still have "THE FRAGILE". And fucking God-Tier "BROKEN".

I'm going to hear it again before I post my review. I will say this, perhaps it was because I lowered my expectations, but I liked it more than I thought I would.
BUT I also think I may already hate "Everything" as much as I hate "The Hand That Feeds", which is by far the worse NIN song.
I am going to try my best to not let my favoritism for them get in the way.

If we're honest, everything post-"THE FRAGILE" is pretty terrible. And I openly admit how much I love "WITHA TEETHA".
But, comparatively . . .

I wholeheartedly disagree with that, but its your opinion and that's ok. We'll still write pen pal/love letters to each other someday.

There's a pretty good interview with Trent on spin.com right now, for those interested. Now I'm off to give the new album a second whirl.

Because today is my last free day for a while I'm going to go track by track on my review. I will do my best to not blather on. Full disclosure: (I've mentioned this before) NIN is probably my 2nd favorite band/musician/whatever you wanna call him/them ever. Well 3rd if you include Fiona Apple.
Anyway, NIN- Hesitation Marks
Eater of Dreams- The "Pinion" of this album. Great for what it is.
Copy of A- Has really grown on me since I first heard it. Solid song.
Came Back Haunted- Maxed out for me a while back. Average song with some cool spots.
Find My Way- Excellent. Trent kills it with these types of songs.
All Time Low- Starts of pretty weak but I really like the last couple of minutes. Average.
Disappointed- Good song. I'm starting to realize that in this album Trent isn't screaming and throwing a wall of guitars up in spots where he normally has. Fuck him for not doing the "same old" right?
Everything- UGH. Why? Terrible. Only The Hand That Feeds is worse. But this song is still new, and I actually LIKED THTF when I first heard it.
Satellite- Seems to be using an old style with another he's never tried before. I like it.
Various Methods of- Very cool. Really dig this one.
Running- What a weird little song. It's ok.
I Would For You- Damn fine song, only the little chorus in the middle kinda brought it down a tad. Other than that this song is gravy.
In Two- This is one of the few that has some
teeth. Excellente.
While I'm Still Here- Is this a sister song to Find My Way? His vocal melody is very similar (the same in parts). Like it nevertheless.
Black Noise- This is just the outro to the previous song. Not sure why it as its own track.
There you have. I keep reading how he thought a lot about the Downward Spiral while making this but it reminded me way more of Pretty Hate Machine.
Overall I liked it. To rate it as objectively as I can I gave each song a score then added them up, divided by 13 (Black Noise shouldn't have its own track!)
The result was a 7.5/10, which to be honest, for ME, that is on the low side for a NIN album. That's unfair cause with most groups I'd be thrilled with a 7.5. I will definitely be buying this, however.

Jeesus fuck, here I reply with probably my longest post on this damn forum... and the fucking hotel wifi takes a shit prior to submitting it. I'm not typing that shit all over so cliff notes:
- I wanted to give Underkenwuteverz's gif a proper shout out for an awesome BB gif avatar.
- Mosty agree with Ravenpiggy's review- he honestly probably enjoyed it more than I did, I don't give scores and will just say it's an "OK" NIN album post Fragile era. (In Two is a great song, love Copy of a still- wish he would sing it angrier like the live version, yes- the outro song isn't really an outro song, other shit I don't feel like re-typing.)
- Can't wait for the Tension tour in St. Paul. Should be a top-notch production and can see some of these songs translating better live.
Fucking stupid fucking hotel, assholes.

one word ... WEAK
Full review: likely even worse than the slip (of which I liked two or three tracks... no balls to be found on this record anywhere ... tidbits of sound I appreciate here and there, but there's not a single, stand out track on the entire record ... quite honestly, it sounds lazy to me ... Trent's strong suit has never been his lyrics/vocals and without the vast layers of actual sound (which he generally masters perfectly), there's really not much to keep me drawn in.
Trent isn't screaming and throwing a wall of guitars up in spots where he normally has. Fuck him for not doing the "same old" right?
yes absolutely ... fuck him for being a pussy. I don't want a Cure record, or a Timberlake record, or a How To Destroy Angels record ... I want a fucking new NIN record.
PLEASE! SOMEONE! HELP! TRENT NEEDS HEROIN! A LOT OF IT! AND QUICK!
This record may get a handful of spins to confirm my initial thoughts, but considering I've heard all of the leaked tracks, which amounts to nearly half the album, a number of times and don't care for them, this album's got some 'splainin' to do.

Nope, no fuck yous directed to Trent at all. He (and all other artists) are free to do what they like with their music. It doesn't mean I have to like it though.

you're right ... he, as an artist, has the right to turn into an absolute kitten ... thank Christ for leaks ... paying for this record 15 years ago would have been a damn shame

I don't know, it'd be kinda weird if he was still the same ol' angry Trent. Dude's in his 40's with a smoking hot wife.
But yea, a couple of more "mean" sounding tracks would've been welcome.

don't need "mean" or "angry" per say ... just not dull ... it's not like he's writing happy, smiley pop songs ... their just, well, sad old man pop songs and not great ones ... he's not singing about anything new in comparison to past releases. A track or two with a little something more to offer should be there. His history proves he's capable. There's just nothing new or exciting he's doing here from a NIN, or general music, perspective ... in this case, I just find he hasn't done much of anything interesting. I see his attempt at minimalist atmosphere which he's been using and working towards perfecting for a long time and it's just not doing it for me.

In regards to the recent posts above: a little more electronic gee-tar, a littles less electronic iMac.
And Trent can still do "the mean shit" if he wants to. Take a look at the videos of the recent festival shows. He can get angry when he damn well pleases and doesn't come off fake despite being a different person 15-20 years later. Even with these new songs- 'Copy of a' being a great example.

Yes... more gee-tar, less iMac!
I can appreciate the live production/presentation of Copy of A, but the song is still pretty underwhelming in and of itself.

The Nine Inch Nails leader found love, won an Oscar, and walked away from his band and major labels. But with NIN's new 'Hesitation Marks,' the former dark prince of alt-rock (and current family man) returns to a digital universe he helped create.

There is nothing about this that pleases me, on the surface. I'm markedly hesitant to read the article.

I read it. It's a good read. No idea why Spin chose to put the one line in the whole thing where he talks about being pissed off.
Seriously, its the very last thing he says in it. And it kinds sounded like it may have been a joke. "Oh, don't worry. There are still plenty of things that pods me off."
*piss me off

I have heard a few tracks. I will wait to comment until I hear the whole thing. The stuff I have heard is pretty good. I don't really like the single though.

Oversharing feels vulgar to me now. I know we've been fooled into thinking it's okay to show dick pics and that the Kardashians' behavior is normal, but it's not. I've tuned out in the last couple years. Everybody's got a fucking opinion. It takes courage to put something out creatively into the world, and then to see it get trampled on by cunts? It's destructive.

that is a great fucking quote

Well, I'm listening to the album for the first time right now, and I think I have every right to "trample" on it.
