Reptile w/ Gray Numan is I think my favorite NIN song ever.
Anyway, this is pretty presumptuous but I think I have a fairly sick read on Trent Reznor and why his music is kind of meh nowadays.
Disclaimer: Hesitation Marks as a studio album is just passably listenable; most of the songs seem boring and superficial BUT when performed live I think a lot of them really open up into something much more palatable.
That being said obviously Heroin Trent is the best Trent and i think why is because he's a slightly OCD/addictive personality who without the break that that drugs give him reverts to execution mode by default. Maynard is the same way i think except that he doesn't have 1/10th the talent that Trent does so when drugs force him to indulge int he moment/not give a fuck about routine all he can do is grab his cock and give a pretty stellar performance of Sober where as Trent is able to 100% indulge in the vast creative well he has. I've heard enough interviews with the guy to know that he is basically a robot in touring mode which means that when he's jumping back and forth between hollywood soundtracks and touring and 1 year production timelines he really only allows his creative side a limited window to shine through. That's why everything feels so stilted in his current music; it lacks the dynamics that flow from an unrestrained artist.
Maybe this is LDO as I personally am not going to be the parasitic fan who thinks he should get back on drugs for my personal amusement, but I think it's pretty clear that his energy is going to be too devoted towards the structure of routine in everyday life to ever produce anything of real artistic value again unless some mitigating factor forces a break. And good for him that he's escaped that. It's certainly bittersweet though since I don't think there's an artist alive that has the potential to wow as much as he does if totally untethered.
