I was so let down with their latest album. They have gone down the Metallica route where their best years are far behind them. I saw them in 1997 and they were a great live. I heard they can be a bit of a "hit and miss" band when it comes to playing live though.

I'll have to disagree with you there and say I thought their latest album was pretty good.  They're not really the same band they were back in the 90s though.  All their albums post-Badmotorfinger have been building up to where they are now.  I can see how some who preferred their older style wouldn't be behind them in this.  Personally I enjoy both the new and old style Soundgarden.

^ +1 HB.  I've seen them back in the day, on their first reunion tour a couple of years ago and then again this year.  The best show was by far the first reunion tour, simply because the sound and venue were excellent.  The couple times I saw them in the 90's the sound was muddy as fuck, although I still enjoyed it.  There are plenty of great songs on the new album and I hope they put out another.  Chris' voice is hit or miss live, but the band is always tight.

My thoughts exactly. Maybe there are more coming. It's not an awful song, but still...

Nah, that was an awful song. One of the low points of the album for sure.

Absolutely.

I thought King Animal was better than Superunknown. The latter was such a disappointment, coming hot on the heels of the psychedelic juggernaut that was Badmotorfinger. It was a patchwork of bland radio friendly 90's alternarock. Very disappointing. Lyrically very boring and pedestrian. Down On The Upside was better - but only marginally. King Animal has them back on the right track.

I wasn't too disappointed by Superunknown, it has quite a few great tracks, but has a whole bunch of filler as well. I do prefer both Badmotorfinger and Down On The Upside though.

I'm not sure where King Animal sits for me. I thought it was a surprisingly good album considering how long they'd been AWOL. It certainly harked back to a simpler and more organic sound than Superunknown and DOTU, both of which I believe are over produced.

^ Those albums may be overproduced, but they sound great despite that. And more importantly, Soundgarden is an amazing live band (granted, Cornell can be hit or miss live vocally), which counts for a lot IMO. In other words, they weren't hiding behind studio recordings, like some of their contemporaries.

am I the only one that has near-zero interest in this band anymore, particularly with regard to the current ongoings/release

They're an empty vessel. An empty vessel makes the greatest sound but not with the release of their latest album. Terrible.

i thought king animal was good. not there best obviously, but i am just embracing that they are still making new original music. i thought about half the album was great and the other half kind of forgettable.will all the other shitty music going around these days, this was a step above

The more I listen to King Animal, the more I like it. My one complaint is the "pop" leaning on some songs (or parts of songs), most notably Halfway There. I much prefer the more ballsy aspect of Soundgarden, of which this has plenty.

I am a big proponent of evaluating an album on its own merits, not in relation to other albums (although it's a natural thing to do).

When I listen to these tracks, I hear solid songwriting, great vox and tight musicianship. These tracks are not "samey" - each has it's own vibe and draws you in. There are so many utterly disappointing bands, this just shines.

They played most of these tracks live on the last tour, and they killed.

In short, for those who have dismissed this because of your preconceived expectations - give it another shot. If you don't like it, that's your loss in my opinion. Can't wait for the next one, and especially more live shows.

I was really hoping they were gonna get Robert Smigel to direct the video for this song. It would've made the song better.

The full soundtrack to 12 Years a Slave is now streaming on SoundCloud via Rolling Stone.
Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s new song (with Civil Wars’ Joy Williams) “Misery Chain” is the 13th track on the album.

Sounds like Matt Cameron will be sitting out the next tour due to Pearl Jam commitments:

Sound like it's not a permanant thing, however for me Soundgarden without Cameron is about as exciting as APC without Freese.

SOUNDGARDEN PLAY “THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE” FOR THE FIRST TIME IN JUST RELEASED 90′S REHEARSAL CLIP

Soundgarden uploaded audio onto Youtube Sunday and Soundcloud (4 days ago) of the band hashing out their classic “The Day I Tried To Live” in a 90′s rehearsal. It’s a rare glimpse into the band’s songwriting process with Chris Cornell outlining the song’s arrangement before they attempt to play it apparently for the first time. 1994′s “The Day I Tried to Live” was the second single from the Soundgarden’s fourth studio album, Superunknown. The song peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 25 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart almost 20 years ago.

Holy shit, they fucking murdered it at SXSW tonight. Full show is up on iTunes, watch it. They ran through the entire Superunknown album beginning to end for it's 20th anniversary. I'm really not big on Spoonman but listen to the version from this show, Cornell sounds insanely good in this.
