JOKES! The show was fantastic. All of the new songs are great. Part of Me was insanely good. Everyone was having fun. Pneuma was a highlight. Invincible is bonkers. Sad I missed Descending (my favorite new song) but my third eye was proved fully open so I can’t complain. Hats off to junior and the video team. Everything looked awesome. MJK could’ve been a little louder in the mix, but what are you gonna do. One of the best shows I have seen. Rock!

Re: New Album Touring (with SPOILERS!)
We go to a lot of shows, but tool is defiantly the most. I've seen Primus like 9 or 10 time, Ghost like 5, SOAD 4. My wife and I dont have any kids and a few weeks of vacation a year. 90% of it goes to seeing shows
This year has been a big Tool year, we have an issue and saw them 7 times... so that's a good chunk of the 20.

On my first show (Düsseldorf 2001) they played Eulogy, Prison Sex and Pushit. That really was some luck of the draw.
Re: New Album Touring (with SPOILERS!)
Friends of mine first went to tilburg and then a few days later to Dusseldorf. They gambled wisely (even though Eulogy isn't my fave song would've been nice to have seen it).thekillingjoke wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2019 12:07 pm On my first show (Düsseldorf 2001) they played Eulogy, Prison Sex and Pushit. Re: New Album Touring (with SPOILERS!)
OK GUYS IM UP FROM MY SLUMBER AND READY TO TALK
The Raleigh show was amazing! Holy shit I can’t believe it’s already over. So much time to hype it, so much delivered by the end of the night. I think the surprise highlight of the night was intolerance. The whole band killed the song but it was Maynard who stole the show during that performance. I never saw them during the undertow days so I can’t compare but it sounded flawless. He absolutely put everything into that song. Sounded better than the album. “We wrote this song in a train car going across the country back during the depression”
This was my first VIP anything so I have nothing to go against but I will absolutely do it again. We arrived two hrs later than I planned cuz kids so we ended up about 60th in line (showed up at 1pm). That gave us second row for soundcheck and third row section 1 seat 1 for the show. Right in front of Adam. After us it filled out fast. I’d say 150 ppl for VIP overall. if you want to maybe shake Adams hand you will need to be <30 in line but I didn’t really care. There was a few annoying TOOL fans that I’m glad I wasn’t stuck with for front row. The soundcheck was short cuz I think they were behind schedule but we got to hear Maynard practice descending with the band while we waited in the halls and then got fear Inoculum single in full with the 3 guys along with a quick pneuma solo by Adam. Justin said a few things to the crowd and then we got escorted out of the arena into the vip section. The food is venue specific but there was plenty and the brisket we had was phenomenal.
I saw a crowd gathering near the exit door so I scarfed down the food and went over to see what was up. It was the signed poster gang waiting to be let out, so we stood with them and talked to a few people. They opened the doors at 5:30 instead of six so I think that helped me secure a signed poster but you basically have to be ready to run to the main march booth once the door opens. I was 13 out of 17 that got one at that booth. They are $300 USD. They brought the signed posters down at 6:00 to the main march booth (prob 150) and separated them into 20s and took them to each booth. Seemed they were doing 17 each booth with 3 extra incase there were any rejections due to damaged posters. There was a lot of unhappy people from general admission that wanted signed posters but got nothing so be quick. Ended up selling my unsigned poster to a dad cuz I scored my signed one.
The VIP swag is very nice quality. I got a Large zip up varsity hoody and it it fits me true to size. The fleece material inside is dope and kept me fully warm after we left the venue. Backpack is really nice too, padded shoulder straps for the win! Pins of the bandmates are nice but I really have no use for them. Juan the VIP manager was cool and kept everything in order but you can tell that dude was tired. He must get hounded by a ton of annoying people constantly.
We went back into the VIP section for another drink and saw a dude who snagged a signed drum head for $1500! It was beautiful but shiieeet I was never gonna get that. After some gallivanting around the stadium we sat down at 7pm and waited for killing joke to perform. They came out at 7:15 and while I was open minded to hearing them but I will say that they were god awful. Mainly due to sound issues? All you could hear was the face melting bass but not in a good way. The keyboard player was the best part when you could hear him.
Tool came on around 8:15 and took off with Fear Inoculum and never stopped until intermission.

As said before Intolerance was the highlight but that doesn’t sell any other songs short. They killed every song. Descending was as good as I hoped but Danny did have drum issues and lost his mandala pad mid song and had a tech swap it out while he played without missing a single beat. Dude is a beast. Maynard was a little low in the mix for the first half of the set but they fixed it mid show and he sounded better than ever for the remainder.
The entire band was lively. Adam moved around more than ever and getting to lock eyes with him during the chugging in invincible was worth the cost of VIP alone. I stared into his soul and I’m pretty sure he told who me his favorite comic book villain
was by just blinking at me. Magneto. His talkbox solo in Jambi was special to see and he killed it in descending and intolerance. Again, not selling any other songs short they all were in the zone.
Maynard was energetic and really sang his heart out. I don’t know if they pitch bend his voice or if he really is that talented because he was nothing short of perfect. Every note hit and he sounded better than when I saw him in ‘01. How the fuck does that happen? He spoke three times inbetween songs and said it was a pleasure before the usual “take out your phones” schtick during stinkfist. I think I was one of three people that didn’t bother with their phone and I’m glad I didn’t. Ending the night with stinkfist was amazing and I’m glad I saw it all with my own eyes. There’s plenty of videos floating around already so save yourself with camera and just watch.
Justin was pumped during the whole show and I think he was still sick but you really couldn’t tell except for him blowing his nose a few times. That guy never stopped grooving. Invincible, intolerance, schism, pneuma he was ace in every song.
Danny was insane and earned every drop of sweat that flung around the stage as he beat the shit out of the drums. His unique CCTRIP was something else and his pre solo on the giant gong was so fucking cool. Also, hats off to whoever added the kaleidoscopic video of him during the solo that was a great touch. Chef kiss.
My only complaints honestly were the fans. Too many dickheads try to storm down the aisle to get front row and security kept having to escort them back. It was a little distracting. There was some nut job who had green hair and a red clown nose that wouldn’t stop trying to sneak down front. Get stuffed. Same with the fat blonde chick that wouldn’t stop hair whipping. Lol. Go sit down.
The videos on stage were great but honestly didn’t watch the screen or curtains too much as I was busy soaking being third row and seeing the boys with such detail. I will say the crawling hands video during the end of CCTrip was creepy and cool. Locked eyes with all of the band, I’m 6ft5 so I’m pretty sure I stood out to them and got some eye sex from them all. Sorry to anyone behind me I was the tall English dude with a red soccer shirt.
The lighting and lasers was where it was at though! Holy shit! what an amazing experience! I’m going to try to score tickets for ATL early next year and sit further back so I can take in the lighting. Really great job Junior and it was a nice treat to meet you at the end of the show when I was searching for a set list. The wife did get one from someone else but it was an older set list from Brooklyn earlier in the week. Shrug. If I may ask, who controls the tool logo behind the band? That thing came to life during the show and it was amazing to see! It was almost the fifth member of the band. Good stuff.
Anyway, I think I’m done. My voice is shot. I’m tired as fuck but still high on life after such an amazing experience. Thanks to everyone involved I won’t forget lastnight. It truly was one for the ages, or at least, until I see them again. Bring on show #3!

Worth the wait Rsh, a most excellent review!

hah yeah for vip it’s first arrived gets front and center and I think they flow out one each way until done.
for the soundcheck then group photo you are let in freely but most ppl just flowed down in a line so I ended up same spot as my actual ticket. you could charge and knock a few people over and get up front for that sweet selfie with Adam if needed.
