All post metal/rock sounds the same to me.  I'm sick of the whole genre to be honest - it's been done to death.

You know you love it.

I'm gonna cut you some slack since you have been around for awhile but using Sleepmakeswaves as a comparison is absurd.  Completely different fucking genre.  The Ocean is post metal with prog elements.  Beastwars is pure sludge.  Anciients is prog metal.  Scale the Summit is instrumental prog metal/mathcore.  Octopus is jazz influenced math metal, slightly djent without being lame.

If you want to compare Sleepmakeswaves then compare them to TWDY, Russian Circles, Red Sparowes, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Caspian, GYBE, etc etc etc.....Ya know...POST ROCK....

Please take some time and study the different genres before you start spouting off.

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out - I never would have known otherwise.

You really can't tell the difference between grindcore, punk and thrash?  Seems like metal 101 to me.

Oh I can tell the difference.  But when you break them down it's all 4/4 repetitive monotony played fast.  Metal for simple people with short attention spans

ExFuckingZaktly.  But on a positive note, we are all passionate about our taste and opinion when it comes to music - as evidenced by the fact that loving Tool (heh) is ostensibly what brought us all here.

For the most part, I agree with both recently voiced opinions re:

All post metal/rock sounds the same to me.  I'm sick of the whole genre to be honest – it's been done to death.

 And

All grindcore/post-punk-DIY/thrash sounds the same to me.  When you break them down it's all 4/4 repetitive monotony played fast.  Metal for simple people with short attention spans.

However, there are plenty of exceptions, and this thread is a cool resource for finding and sharing the ones that stand out.

Don't get all butt-hurt if someone doesn't share your taste or opinion*.

Also, keep an open mind because while labels are useful for many reasons, they can also drive you away from checking out something you'd otherwise dig.  Keep it coming.  I'm listening.  (And judging you harshly for the most part.)

If you all haven't heard of them or checked them out, look into Before The Eyewall. Really great psychedelic/atmospheric/doomy kind of stuff. They're really cool dudes to boot and are currently touring the West Coast.

It's rough finding good new music these days.  Underground is the best bet, and I am scouring for new tunes.  Sweet thread

I just found an album that gave me the same chills like Aenima did.

Tesseract - Altered States

The reviews for this album are a little hard to believe.

Though three minutes in, I think I can see why.

Hi Boss, the vocals irk me a little bit- Enigma sounds more progressive. However, the music is astounding.

Gotta be honest I have no idea why this album has received positive reviews.  I fucking hate Tesseract.  They are Djent in the worst way.  Their technical prowess is overstated, particularly when compared to bands like Animals as Leaders, Octopus, and Scale the Summit, whose compositions are far more complex and musical.  When Tesseract gets heavy they sound like a bubble gum rip off of Meshuggah.  And the vocalist is horrific.

@Doors - Sorry bro, no disrespect intended.  Album just doesn't work for me.  That being said this thread is all about new music and I am sure many will appreciate the addition

I've got a good feeling that this will be my "new thing", if you know what I mean.

Thanks for sharing. I really do appreciate it.

They're interesting. Can definitely see how others dig them. They have some pretty cool riffs going on. Vocals kill it for me though. Totally not against clean/melodic vocals over this kind of music, but for my money this is waaaay too poppy and just "too much" in general. The guy(s) barely shut the fuck up! Just super high caterwauling over every square inch of it. And a bit too clean all around, needs more grit.

So that's my grump take. Glad the others are digging it though.

I'm with Mog here.  This Tesseract album is boring and has been done before countless times.

I'm surprised that people here are divided with tesseract. I think they are pretty sweet. When the singer gets heavy with his vocals is when the songs really shine.
