Rate all the Tool and Tool-related albums in one big list!

Post by hellboy »

I'm bored - let's do this! From best to worst:
  1. Tool - Aenima
  2. Tool - Lateralus
  3. APC - Thirteenth Step
  4. APC - Mer De Noms
  5. Tool - 10,000 Days
  6. Tool - Undertow
  7. Puscifer - V is for Vagina
  8. Puscifer - Conditions of My Parole
  9. M.T.void - Nothings Matter
  10. Volto! - Incitare
  11. Pigmy Love Circus - The Power of Beef
  12. APC - eMotive
I've deliberately left out compliations and EP's like Salival, Opiate, and the numerous Puscifer remix thingies.

Anything I've missed? Criteria I've used is that the Tool member must be a member of the band, not just a guest spot (ie Adam with the Melvins). I've also tried to keep it as albums that Tool members have been a part of since Tool was formed (ie no Peach).

I can't even begin to categorize a list like this one, but I think M.T. Void would rank dead last on the list.

Looks like the top two (and rightly so) are Lateralus vs Ænima.

It is always a hard choice, and you really can't go wrong with either as #1.

I will be interested to see if anyone chooses a 1/2 the doesn't include both.

man a year ago or so i got ripped by members of this forum for saying that COMP was better in my mind than Undertow. And to be honestly they are about the same for me. But if i counted right, so far 4 people have put COMP ahead of Undertow.

There's not a chance in hell I'd put any Puscifer or APC album above any Tool album. You all are nuts. Nuts I tell you!

I'm one of those people. I think Undertow is just a product of its time and as such is a bit samey song-to-song in tone and tempo and generally feels dated in terms of it being essentially an early 90s 'alt-metal' record.

For me the idea of COMP is better than the actual record itself. It's an indication that at least one of the members of Tool is hip to try new things, can expand out into varied styles and therefore will have some longevity. I mean he already demonstrated that with APC but I think overall Puscifer solidified it. Tool - given recent comments that the next record could be the heaviest yet - is in danger of being a group of old guys playing metal, not unlike anyone else still out there doing the same thing... Sabbath, Metallica, Slayer, Motorhead, et al.

This is one of the reasons I for one would like to see Tool incorporate more synths and electronics, along with melodic, spacey, softer stuff in the vein of Disposition/Reflection/Intension on the next record.

COMP is ok, but it's definitely not better than anything Tool have put out.

Also, I thought M.T.void was quite interesting and a good listen. The only album on the list I actually dislike was eMotive. I'd happily never listen to that again.

MTVoid had some pretty decent songs on it. The polish singer was a bit too distracting though.

I feel like a lot of what ZUG said about COMP could be said about MTVoid as well.

1. Salival
2. Ænima
3. Lateralus
4. Undertow
5. Opiate
6. Mer De Noms
7. 10,000 Days
8. COMP
9. VivaVajina
10. Side One

Either no one will care or they'll ask why Salival? So I'll say I love it becaus 1. Choosing between Ænima and Lateralus as numero uno is damn near impossible, and I've tried 2. Where else do you get Third Eye then Part of Me? NOWHERE not even in your mom's kitchen It's Too Good of a segue way. Tool probably didn't even realize how awesome that was. 3. Adam and Buzz provide some of the best guitar harmony ever done on You Lied. It's almost Thin Lizzy good and better than Mastodon IMHO

I haven't heard everything on offer so I'll just rank what I have heard:

1. Lateralus
2. Aenima
3. Salival
4. 10,000 Days
5. Mer De Noms
6. Conditions Of..
7. Undertow
8. Thirteenth Step
9. Opiate
10. Emotive

Yeah....I'm one of them cats who only really digs Undertow in fits and spurts. Don't really care for the middle section and Disgustipated gets old at around the four minute mark.

Also, for the uninitiated, there's a Melvins album called Colossus Of Destiny that Adam Jones plays on that is more than worth checking out - but be warned it's a "noise piece" and devoid of any real songs. More like a cross between Throbbing Gristle and Negativland. But for the musically adventurous out there it comes highly recommended by yours truly.

(I suppose it's vaguely Tool oriented - what with Lazy Bones playing on it and all - but not Tool oriented enough to include on a Tool list)
