[Verse 1]
Free fall through our midnight
This epilogue of our own fable
Heedless in our slumber
Floating nescient we
[Verse 2]
Free fall through this boundlessness
This madness of our own making
Falling isn't flying
Floating isn't infinite
[Pre-Chorus]
Come, our end, suddenly
All hail our lethargy
Concede suddenly
[Interlude]
To the quickened dissolution
Pray we mitigate the ruin
Calling all to arms and order
[Verse 3]
Drifting through this boundlessness
This madness of our own making
[Pre-Chorus]
Sound our dire reveille
Rouse all from our apathy
Lest we
Cease to be
[Chorus]
Stir us from our
Wanton slumber
Mitigate our ruin
Call us all to arms and order
[Bridge]
Sound the dread alarm
Through our primal body
Sound the reveille
To be or not to be
Rise
Stay the grand finale
Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue
One drive to stay alive
Elementary
Muster every fiber
Mobilize
Stay alive
[Chorus]
Stir us from our
Wanton slumber
Mitigate our ruin
Call us all to arms and order
Descending
Descending
Fear nothing:
Re: Descending
Awesome song.
With the waves and hovering(?) noise of a spacecraft landing (or whatever) plus that slight left-right sound at the ending of the waves is there a connection with Wings and Viginti Tres?
Somehow, I do think so.

Re: Descending
Had some flashbacks tonight while listening to this song. The live version (4/6/2019) was absolutely amazing.
And this ending with the waves sounds - that gave me goosebumps. Great song overall.

- You like noisy music?
- Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.

- Never thought about it.

Re: Descending
The first time I heard Descending (studio version), I was on my bike on a loooong downhill run (King’s Mountain Road!), coincidentally. I had no idea about the ocean noises and it kinda freaked me out. Oddly, the next time it came around, another downhill run. Fun facts.
I’m really looking forward to seeing this one live. Well, all of FI actually...

Re: Descending
So you were descending while listening to Descending. Were you by the ocean?

Free fall through this bike path
Re: Descending
Not by the ocean, that why it freaked me out.
Yeah, I resemble a Lycra sausage.

Re: Descending
its a great fucking song, but as its bootleg brother Invincible, this track seems to work for me more as the live version, but only the first half
the first half in the album is strange, vocals are strange, and i think they dont have that impact as in the live version, because the latter has substantially different feel to it, especially in terms of vocal timing and rythmic phasing with the instruments
i like the overall sound of Maynard better on both these two tracks, and the band has some extra spark and magic on them in the live versions
but the second half is better in the studio version, parts that i though every time i was listening to the live bootlegs "meh...its just adam wandering around pointlessly for the fifth fucking time until we finally hit the gong part" are now alive and very well working to me
and that gong part, i've read some criticism that its weaker than the live version, but i really dont understand it since every time i hear that part in the album version i got serious goosebumps which didnt happen with the bootlegs... i mean its not just an epic fucking gong (actually i hear another one after it) but its also the sound of the other two instruments soundscape just got a different muscle alltogether and all three instruments enter to godlike level which was very surprising for me, its climax and catharsis at its best (for me)
cheers

Re: Descending
The gong is Good!
Re: Descending
I think the gong is done very well on the album. Gongs aren't really supposed to be whacked in the heat of a big song. The sound they got hear is much more rounded and symphonic vs super thick metal clanging and clocking out other sounds.
I know the pieces fit, I studied the numbers in Southern France.
Re: Descending
Wasn't this song rumored to be part of a trilogy of songs?

Re: Descending
at some point everything and anything was rumored tbh - that being said I never recall any substantiated rumors to that effect unless you count overzealous folks reading way too much into the whole "A/Descending" setlist name
Re: Descending
i thught it was in a newsletter. ill dig it out later.

Re: Descending
I love that the Adam overdub in the pre-chorus before the...third? verse (not played live) is a call forward to the riff he plays into the gong. The composition on this albums is fantastic.
Edit: Also, FUCK DUCKS.

Re: Descending
It’s a stretch and doesn’t make sense thematically but I can’t help but think of Cam De Leon with Ponce De Leon being used in the lyrics. Ponce meaning to make a living off a prostitute’s earnings among other things.

I keep hearing Exorcise the spectacle Exorcise the malady Exorcise the disparate as exercise, like to give them strength.
