Top 10 Guitarists of All Time
***EDIT: Original thread separated into 5 threads to make it less confusing.
A few months back, I got extremely bored one day and decided to try and come up with my own personal top 10 list of musicians at each instrument commonly found in a rock band. I kinda figured that this had probably been a topic in the past, but I couldn't find any similar threads. Since Hellboy decided to post his top 10 Tool songs, I figured now would be as good of a time as any to put this out there for discussion. I tried my best to make my list as objective as possible, but in all honesty it probably ended up about 50% objective, 50% subjective (and even that might be an underestimation). Anyways, here it is:
Guitarists
1.) Jimi Hendrix
2.) Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
3.) David Gilmour - Pink Floyd
4.) Eric Clapton - Cream
5.) John Petrucci - Dream Theater
6.) Pete Townshend - The Who
7.) Stevie Ray Vaughn
8.) Duane Allman - Allman Brothers
9.) Jerry Cantrell - Alice in Chains
10.) Buzz Osborne - Melvins
And there you have it. Feel free to add any categories you think should be included. I'm looking forward to seeing what other people have to say.

1. Jimmy Hendrix ( and all that could have been)

I'll graciously accept your argument as wrong ... although I appreciate where you're coming from, the first does not ultimately equal the best.ilikecheese wrote:"I invented it."

Re: Top 10 Guitarists of All Time
As someone who doesn't really care for the technical aspect of guitar playing, my favorite guitarists are based on tonal characteristics, novelty, how they fit into the atmosphere of their music etc. To me, the actual sound of the guitar is what I love about it as an instrument--mainly, the fucking noise it can bring because its just the aesthetic I prefer. That said,
Duane Denison
Buzz Osborne
J. Mascis
Trey Spruance
Steve Albini/Santiago Durango (inseparable greatness of Big Black)
John McLaughlin
Marc Ribot

Yes.
You know who else is a brilliant guitarist? Deen Ween. Absolutely magnificent. Can mimic any genre with perfection. Not only mimics but brings his own flavour to the mix. And rarely does he get mentioned. Others "geniuses" with a distinctive feel who seem to get overlooked:
Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers)
Ronald Jones (Flaming Lips)
Prince (no...really)
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)
Phil Manzanera (Eno, Roxy Music)
And I vote Fripp's solo on Brian Eno's Baby's On Fire as the greatest solo ever:

^ PRINCE IS ONE BAD MOFO ON A GEE-TAR ... NO ARGUMENT HERE

Yeah, I don't think Prince is overlooked in any way. Anyone who knows anything about music is well aware of his talent.
Re: Top 10 Guitarists of All Time
he may be a great guitarist but he's bonkers when it comes to chem trails. I actually prefer Marty McFly.
Asteroids do not concern me, Admiral. I want that ship, not excuses.
Re: Top 10 Guitarists of All Time
I've posted this clip already but Prince's guitar play on this track from Denmark earlier this year is nice
The last 2.5 minutes....love that tone
Is that how it sounded in concert or did it get a studio enhancement before getting posted? Hmmm

Re: Top 10 Guitarists of All Time
Prince is a trip. I've seen him live a few times and it's always an entertaining show. First time was back in the 90's in Chicago at a small club. He is an incredibly talented guitarist and bassist.
He's got a lot of great songs, but has put out a lot of shitty material over the years as well. Apparently, he's only released a small amount of what he's produced...
This is an interesting clip, if you've got the time.
