How will Tool approach the design of the new album?
The 10,000 Days CD packaging and design was an incredible effort from beginning to end. Well deserving of the awards and accolades. I have no doubt we've all spent hours checking it out and I still love the reaction when I show it to people who haven't yet seen it.

What comes next? How are they going to top this, or will they even try? Will it be a digital only release or an even more elaborate package?
Thoughts, predictions, desires, etc.
Have at it.

Well it definitely won't be digital only, pretty sure we can all agree on that.
I have no clue what they'll go for next but I'm sure it'll be cool.

The disk itself will be manufactured in a whole new format which sounds better than vinyl, will be smaller than a CD and is indestructible. It will also be impossible to uploaded to the internet. When you open the box a 3 dimensional holographic band will sync with the music when you hit play and perform the entire album. It will contain an indecipherable and unsolvable puzzle.

It will be made of 100% recyclable/recycled materials and be completely clear, without any writing or pictures of any kind.

It will have the band standing in the crosswalk of Abbey Road smoking a joint.
Or them at the crosswalk but doing exactly what they're doing on Maynard's pool patio.

I'm sure whatever comes next will be exciting to say the least....but can you really be bothered waiting another three years to find out?

They'll finish recording the album then take 5 years designing the packaging.

It took James Cameron 10 years to realize Avatar into being.
I think there's something in that for everyone here on this forum.

Avatar sucks my freshly manscaped balls so much.
The new album will come with a Little Orphan Annie Decoder Pin that you'll be able to use decode messages when the band puts them out every week via the radio.

Personally, I thought the 10,000 days design was annoying, uninspired, and pretty lame.
As much as I love Alex Greys art, I'm hoping they part ways with that whole visual theme this time around.

Re: How will Tool approach the design of the new album?
I really don't think they will be able to beat the 10,000 days packaging. It was really cool and unprecidented. Because they wont be able to beat it, I think they will have to include more with the cd to intice people to buy it. Probably The Pot DVD. Hopefully something live, but probably not. A golden ticket scam. They know their fans want something, anything live, why wouldn't they give it? Hopefully those ticks and leaches were recorded an see the light of day, they wailed!
Re: How will Tool approach the design of the new album?
Am I the only one that thought the 10,000 days packaging was gimmicky?
Re: How will Tool approach the design of the new album?
Everything except for Undertow and Opiate is pretty gimmicky really. But I still like them. Not Tyson wrote:Am I the only one that thought the 10,000 days packaging was gimmicky?
Re: How will Tool approach the design of the new album?
How are you defining "gimmicky" in this context? Not trying to be a dick, just don't get the point. I guess Hellboy did, so maybe it's just me.Not Tyson wrote:Am I the only one that thought the 10,000 days packaging was gimmicky?
I honestly think it was well done (or I wouldn't have made the post) and unique. They innovated and put out a quality product worthy of the music. I don't find that gimmicky personally.
BTW - I do like Alex's work, but I'm also hoping for a change in direction. Still, I'd rather not have Adam be the sole artistic voice. Collaboration with someone who can bring a fresh perspective.
