Brent Hinds is like a Southern Zack Galifnakis.

Almost called him Jack Galifnakis.

Gack Zalifinakis works too.

the album has a few very awesome songs on it. if they decided to cut it to a 5 track EP I wouldn't have complained.

The album grows on me the more I listen, minus those two songs. I like Halloween and Once More 'Round The Sun OK, but they feel very much like B-sides to me.

As a fan of "LEVIATHAN", and ONLY that album, would you recommend me hopping back on with this album?
O love will you read the letters I will send to you.

It's hard to say, really. I mean, I generally just say "yes" to all because what's a listen? But if you weren't on board with everything post-Leviathan, I can't imagine what would turn you on this one. But there's always a first. I mean, he does yell "Hearts Alive!!!" again so... haha.

the last song on the album is very good. I like the opening and closing riffs a LOT.

If they'd taken the best tracks off The Hunter and the best tracks off Once More Round The Sun they would have a killer album. There's something to be said for not rushing music out...

I would even say a killer double album, or really long 80 minute album because to me it would more be pairing away a couple of tracks off each album that just didn't sit well with me. And then, boom, you got yourself an extra EP sitting there too.

I cannot WAIT to hear what they cut off this album. Something tells me it's going to be more interesting.

They aren't rushing anything. They are making music. That is what musicians do. Obviously they like what they are creating otherwise they wouldn't do it. And they didn't exactly rush out anything. The Hunter came out 3 years ago. Not every band needs 9 nine years to write a new album.

You're right, but I can still see what Hellboy's getting at. They do sort of have a feel of "a Mastodon song goes like this..." I mean, yeah, every band kind of has that, it's why we stick with certain bands. And not every band has to reinvent the wheel front to back each time out. Sometimes "more of the same" is a good thing, and I think Mastodon can fall into that category. However, they're also one of the bands that excels when they try to step outside their box (and I'm mostly talking song/riff structure and all that), so those of us that are fans want to see them do more of it. I LOVE this record and The Hunter, but I truly hope they step out and do some flat out weird shit next time out.

Again though, I think The Hunter and this new album see them stepping out a bit in terms of new tones/textures, and I'm hoping they use that stuff to make something more weird and conceptual. The vocals are improving more and more each time out, and I dig the clean vocal harmonies SO fucking much. That shit, with well-placed growling/screaming, is my favorite thing.

I think their proggy days are behind them. Can't imagine them making another Crack the Syke style album. No more long, multi-part tracks. They definitely wanted to trim their shit down. I dunno I like what they are doing. Even High Road has grown on me a bit. That chorus is slightly more palatable on a decent set of speakers. Still a bit annoying but musically the song is solid. Chimes at Midnight is fantastic. I respect Mastodon quite a bit. They make the music they want to make and they deliver on a consistent basis.

My money's on them doubling down on conceptual weirdness on the next one.

they already stated they're doing like a winter themed LP after pulling some of those songs off of this summer themed LP. I'm actually looking forward to that release. they said it's going to be a little heavier/darker kind of trip.

I was looking at buying the vinyl edition of the new Mastodon album the other day, and some Aussie stores were charging $90 to pre-order it.

Don't be an idiot - order it from the Fourtheye Amazon store for US$35.00 (plus postage)...

'Making Of' part 3 contains a lot of Brann Dailor.

- You like noisy music?
- Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.
- You don't like to think? What do you like?
- Never thought about it.

Wheeeeee. I still haven't stopped jamming it for the most part over the past few weeks. I love it, although plenty of others will disagree. Can't wait for my vinyl to come in.
