I havent seen a star wars film since the release of Episode I. I've never seen Episodes II or III. Last weekend I purchased all 6 movies, so far I've only re-watched Episode IV. I think im going to watch it in this order. IV, V, I, II, III, VI. Trying to get it all in before launch day.

So anyway, I'm back home now so here's an extended, not very spoilery review (in a spoiler tag anyway, just in case, but I'm not giving any major plot points away):

• Overall the movie was excellent, certainly better than the prequels.
• Don't think too hard about the plot (not that anyone should be anyway).
• For the most part the story was reasonably predictable. None of the spoilers really came as a shock to me.
• The weakest parts of the movie are the ones with the older cast members.
• The new cast was great for the most part, though Adam Driver didn't do much for me. His performances without the mask I found a little cringeworthy.
• The first third of the movie is great, the middle third a little meh, and then it picks up again towards the end
• The 3D was entirely forgettable. Don't feel like you're missing anything if you go to a 2D only session
• The special effects are great, especially the various creatures and characters littered throughout the movie. You could certainly tell for the most part that they were practical effects. Much much better than the shitty CGI stuff in the prequels. (that's not to say there wasn't any CGI, but for the most part it felt right).

I want to see this so fkn bad, but I get way to anxious and uncomfortable around the sweaty stinky "hip gangsta wannabes" on the fkn Gold Coast that I have to wait till the crowds die down.... I remember when the first Timothy Zahn novel came out after years of no Star Wars in '91, and how excited I was.... There was no hype back then...

OMG!! So very good. So much to process. I highly recommend two viewings. Don't overthink it, just enjoy it. So many feels. Can't wait to see it again. We went to the 11pm show due to a work xmas party. We almost stuck around to see again, but it was 1:30 am. Btw, you couldn't tell it was that late b/c they are showing it all night long and there were still plenty of people in line at the concessions. Patton Oswalt was right....J.J. Abrams did it.

I thought The Force Awakens was very entertaining, though it definitely has a lot of Episode IV retread. The movie doesn't suffer too much from it but it didn't seem necessary at all. Sure the saga is a tone poem, but another trench run? Another important droid on a mission? Too many fine strokes with the retread but again, the best parts of the movie help the movie stand on it's own. The new characters are great, the old ones carry the torch well. You can tell that the practical sets brought more life out of the acting. The cheese is still strong, but it's more authentic and even a sharper kind of cheddar. One thing I've heard complaints of were about Kylo Ren, that he was too "emo" but that's obviously what they were going for. He's supposed to be a Darth Vader poser, a wannabe bad boy who's too good to be bad and tries too hard. Hugely disappointing they just made Andy Serkis look like a Gollum/Voldemort hybrid. I was hoping for something more frightening, but the idea of a giant Sith lord is pretty intriguing. I'm very curious to see what were all George's concepts and what were all JJ/Lawerence's. Rumors are abound they didn't just throw away his outlines like George said they did. The original screenwriter who was going directly from the outline is credited, so I guess we'll know at some point. Overall, an entertaining retread that will get overzealous fanboys nitpicky but will satisfy those who wish the prequels never happened. And if you didn't care before, you probably won't care now. 3/5 stars
