Led Zeppelin has re-mastered and re-released their stuff various times. They even just released a dvd/live album of their recent one-off reunion that doesn't have who many people consider to be the most important part of the band.
Pink Floyd has re-mastered/re-released Dark Side what, like 4 or 5 times by now? They even remastered/re-released their whole catalog just last year.
They are, of course, far from the only bands to do stuff like that, but they are two examples I'd imagine would get people's attention here.
This is the first release by Tool that would even be in that ballpark. Is it a "cash grab"? I don't know, probably. I just think a re-release on the scope of the above examples would've been a 100% true "cash grab". Think about it. $25, $30 bucks available at your local shop? (sans signatures) They'd sell a hell of a lot more than 5,000.
Look, this is NOT a defense of this release. I made up my mind not to buy it as soon as I found out there is no new/previously unreleased stuff on it. All I'm saying is don't act like Tool is the only band to ever pull stuff like this when bigger and much more famous bands than them have been pulling worse for much longer.

Some of those remastered Pink Floyd albums that came out last year could be had at Best Buy for like $10 though.
Oh and fuck Tool. Those greedy sell-outs.
You can pick up like any Rush album for like $5 nowadays.
Jeebus! Â Just to pick it up? Â Rush might be even greedier than Tool! Â How much do they charge you to actually take it home with you?!?

Indeed, which is cool until you remember that it's like the 3rd, 4th I don't even know time they've been re-released.

^ There are bands out there that add value when they do this kind of shit... make it worth your while to get a re-release...
Yes, for example, they have done multiple re-releases. Â At least one series had not only remastered audio, but included rare bonus material for each. Â Some great alternate takes, unreleased tracks, instrumental versions, studio outtakes/blooper kinda shit. Â I really enjoy listening to those. Â There are plenty of other examples.

Sure, or if you don't have all of their catalog yet, getting some of their albums for $10 is quite a good deal.

That pretty much sums up the problem with Opiate for me. Â The price doesn't bother me so much. Â The lack of extras was pretty disappointing though.

I'm embarrassed that this is my favorite band. I couldn't agree more brother. It was great to see peeps on the '09, '10 & '12 cash grab tours, but I'm done w/ deaf, dumb, and blind support of this band. Anyone wanna buy some posters?
Yo Mysta. Â Nice to see you.
And no, not looking for any more crap to clutter my life. Â Thanks though 8`)

As I previously said, I didn't buy this re-release because it didn't have any of this.
I'm not arguing FOR this release, I'm just pointing out how there's people so shocked and amazed at this when other bigger more famous bands have been doing worse for years. Some of you act like Tool created this "new idea" to bleed fans of money.
And can I just add that it's funny to me that a lot of you are ok with multiple re-releases by other bands but shit all over this limited edition? I get it, it's expensive. I am not going (not a toolarmy member) buy it. Just don't buy it. It lets little Johnny son-of-a-bitch in Bummfuck, Montana have a better chance of getting the copy he wants. Win win!

Eh. I get what you all are saying but I'm sure the Floyd knows a huge part of their fan base that already has all their stuff will still buy this. It's cool for teenagers and people like that, but the kids nowadays prefer their mp3 on their Zunes and stuff.
But I get it. If I was someone who was just discovering Floyd or just never completed the collection it would be awesome.
