Watch the Repackaged HANNIBAL Episode 4 Now
Last week it was announced that NBC would be pulling its new crime drama Hannibal‘s upcoming fourth episode “œuf†in the wake of the Boston Marathon tragedy. The episode’s Case of the Week was about children killing other children — something that had series creator Bryan Fuller asking to have it pulled completely while the series was still in production, after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. The hesitation about the episode was already clear, as it didn’t appear in press packs for the series (the episode order of the press screeners went 1, 2, 3, 5, 6).
While the idea to cut the episode has been universally supported, Fuller wanted to make sure that fans were able to keep up with the character building in the episode that was separate from the crime, especially after last week’s surprising ending. So NBC “cannibalized†the episode into webisodes for viewers, and put them online. Hit the jump for the clips.
Though the exceptional Hannibal has not been doing particularly well in the ratings, NBC at least seems to want to put in the effort to give it a chance by offering up these webisodes, avoiding the confusion of skipping the episode altogether.
Last week’s episode ended with Abigail Hobbs being in debt to Hannibal Lecter after she killed her assailant and he helped her hide the body. In the introduction to this repackaged fourth episode, Fuller explains how things proceed:
“[It] details the relationship between Hannibal Lector and Abigail Hobbs, played by Kacey Rohl. As the series goes on, this relationship gets much more complicated and becomes a load-bearing element of our storytelling. So we wanted to make sure that you have all the scenes to follow the story along.â€
I for one am pretty excited to see how things develop between Lecter and Abigail — whether he ends up turning her into a protege, or whether she ends up having some eventual humanizing effect on him. Of course, don’t forget that on Thursday at 10 p.m., things will resume with Episode 5, “Coquilles.â€

Wicked bad luck on my part - just quite playing "ASSASSINS CREED II" to watch this. Can't get it in my country.
Ah well.

Hannibal Feeds Jack Crawford
Â
This week’s blog is from José Andrés, Hannibal’s Food Consultant
Â
This was one of the most exciting episodes for me because it was the first time that Hannibal was going to prepare/cook a human and feed him to Jack. I immediately thought of what a menu from Hannibal would look like. You see, his mind operated very methodically, mathematically, organized… he is highly strategic - so the meal would have to be quite sophisticated yet simple. This is really how chefs have to think…
So I suggested a pork loin, such as Iberico, to try to recreate the actual size of a human and thought about pairing this dish with fruit - pork and fruit is a classic pairing - so I would use some roasted apples. This style of cuisine food is simple in being focused on the ingredients, but sophisticated enough to interest someone like Hannibal. This needed to be credible to the audience.
Still, I felt like a red “sweet†sauce with red fruits (strawberries, raspberries, currants), like Cumberland, was needed. Cumberland is the traditional English sauce - that also happens to be in the classic Auguste Escoffier book - and I thought that referencing the conventional names of recipes would give Hannibal an even greater credibility by being gastronomically savvy.
Then came the dish presentation. It needed to be simple but somehow also provide a glamorous visual… How would Hannibal serve this dish to Jack? A silver tray maybe? Touches of chervil here and there? Roasted apples with caramelized crystal sugar around it? Yes… This is a great moment!  We need to do this!
Of course no meal is complete without a good wine. How do we show Hannibal as a wine connoisseur? Perhaps he could use a decanter to air his wine? Perhaps we select and show wines from unknown and “dark†places - Priorat wine from Catalonia would be under this category. Maybe, because this takes place in Baltimore, we showcase Virginia wines like the Blenheim Winery - you know, Dave Matthews’ winery? Vintages from the ’60s maybe to enunciate his age?
For sure I could keep going on ideas for this… but this would do for now…

Hannibal Renewed for Season 2
Time to celebrate with a delicious meal!
Â
This is a happy day for all of us Hannibal fans: NBC have renewed the series for Season 2!
“We’re so proud of Bryan [Fuller]’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling,†NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke said. “There are many great stories still to be told.â€
Season 2 will again be comprised of thirteen episodes and NBC notes it "will air no earlier than midseason" - meaning it's possible it could air in the summer next year. Season 1 was initially likely to air in the summer itself, until Do No Harm's quick cancellation led to an earlier debut.
Hannibal has struggled in the ratings, but had some factors that helped it. Besides NBC's overall struggles frankly lowering the bar for success, Hannibal is an international co-production with far less of a financial risk for NBC. And while it's those live ratings that still bring in the most money, NBC notes in the press release for the renewal how the audience is notably larger when time shifting is taken into account, stating, "its 18-49 rating grows by 75% going from next-day 'live plus same day' ratings to 'live plus seven day' results."
Regardless of the specifics, rejoice... Hannibal will eat again.

Re: Hannibal Thread
This has been my contender for best show on TV for awhile, but that season finale, holy shit, one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.
