AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
[BBvideo 560,340][/BBvideo]
I was in a weird place when I first heard this album. I was happy with a great job, earning lots of money, surrounded by tons of friends, partying all the time, working out, hiking, writing, making music, enjoying my girlfriend in a foreign country - but there was something around the edges of my life that was starting to get dark.
Nagging doubts about the future. Looking at myself in the mirror each day and not liking what I saw. Alcohol becoming an even bigger problem. Uncertainty with the future of my relationship.
Finding this album at that time perfectly encapsulated what was going through my head. I'd often go home from partying and making music with my friends by myself well after the sun was up, with a bag full of Guinness and cigarettes, and just stare out the window while listening to this. The ebb and flow of the glimmering hope, the constant resignation, and the unending sense that I was so very small, so scared, and so not sure of anything.
At times "UNTRUE" feels so utterly devoid of hope and love, it's almost suffocating. And then it'll slowly turn a corner, and the sun will start to rise.
Despite its dark overtones, I've always found this to be an incredibly interesting and good album. It's also one of the rare albums where you're completely comfortable listening to it at the club, or chilling out at 10:00pm after work. It has a unique dynamic that makes it both danceable, and chillable (NEW WORD!).
I know I've talked up this album before, and indeed, probably posted it. Now hopefully people give it a solid listen and see what I see in it.
Enjoy the ride. I'm ecstatic to be able to share this with you.

Aight.
NOTE: I originally BLOOD AND TIME - "AT THE FOOT OF THE GARDEN" or BRENDAN PERRY - "ARK". But I couldn't find either of them as full albums.
So I went with another "B".

Re: AOTW2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
I can see this album being a go to album after a big night out, had a few pingers, you're slowly coming down but you want that euphoria you were just experiencing to last just a little more. You're sipping a beer, deep in thought trying not to chew into your cheek. You're breathing deep but not even noticing it. Things just seem down and this music is just escalating the feeling. A few brief moments of euphoria escape but they are getting less and less frequent. The sun is rising and your eyes are starting to get heavy. You lay down and spoon with your significant other, holding onto something tangible as the fun you had the night before starts to dissipate, while this album slowly lulls you into an uncomfortable sleep, a semi unconsciousness. You wake up a few hours later, scattered as fuck, looking 10 years older, but it's ok, you're 24, you've got your whole life ahead of you, a beautiful woman by your side and a great job, party hard dude.
Yeah fuck this album, downer indeed.

At least it got a emotive response from me, so props for that.

"Emotive response" or "Reminding Crow once again that he'll never be truly happy with life ever"?
Hmmm, we'll let the audience decide this one.

Re: AOTW2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
I didn't listen the whole way through because I'm not currently on pingers.

In the hope that you may have contributed something cool to the conversation, I clicked on "Display Post".liz wrote:I didn't listen the whole way through because I'm not currently on pingers.
I think you need to read up on drug laws in South Korea. At no point have I ever listened to this album on MDMA; nor would I feel the need to.
I was under the impression that I explained quite well why I'd chosen this album.
While what Tyson said was (to me) incredibly apt, there is no reason why this album should be treated as anything related to illicit substances.
Thanks for your rating and contribution. Most of all, thank you for listening.
O love will you read the letters I will send to you.
Re: AOTW2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
I never meant to imply it was an album to listen to coming down off pingers, it's an album about coming down off whatever or just feeling down in general.
Listening to this ON pingers makes no fucking sense.

Re: AOTW2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
Don't get all personally butt hurt but I was not really that interested in why you chose the album but the album itself. There is some music that I can and have appreciated on pingers that otherwise would have left me cold. I think this may have improved with some substance abuse which as you know is not legal here either so I presume I am speculating. The Boss wrote:In the hope that you may have contributed something cool to the conversation, I clicked on "Display Post".liz wrote:I didn't listen the whole way through because I'm not currently on pingers.

One third of the way in, and I'm pretty sure I'll never listen to this again.

Re: AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
Thoughts on this AOTW:
Canned, repetitive, uninspired percussion and samples throughout.
Mumbled, disjointed "vocals"
This definitely creates a vibe, but what a downer of a vibe it is.
I would never actively seek this out again.
Also: Why the hell did they include a picture of Thom Yorke on the YT vid?
On to Tyson's pick.

So, my review of your choice last week had NOTHING to do with your review of mine this week?Kittaan wrote:Thoughts on this AOTW:

Re: AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
So I came back to this today to finish off what I started last night. It's surprise no one to hear this isn't a genre I have much love for, but that aside, I really don't think it offered anything interesting. It seems overly repetitive to me.

Personally I feel we are more mature than that and are giving honest opinions.
But I tend to put a lot of faith in people.

That's what I hoped, too.

Re: AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
All joking aside, no. Not even a little bit. Look at my previous reviews. I am not, have never, and will never be a fan of the overuse of canned percussion and repetitive sampling. That was my primary turn off, but the vocal effects/choices were right up there as well. The Boss wrote:So, my review of your choice last week had NOTHING to do with your review of mine this week?
We will all be biased by our taste in music, but I like a fairly wide variety of genres. Despite my bias AGAINST electronic music/samples/canned drums, etc, there are a number of records I dig that rely heavily on them. Your pick was not one of them.
If I liked your pick, your review of mine wouldn't have stopped me from telling you. I just wish you (and others) would give a little more feedback on your opinion.
For me, this doesn't provide much to understand where you're coming from:

Wow, where do I begin.
There was nothing about this that I either liked, or hadn't heard before.
Not much left to say.

Any reason the picks can't be posted without telling us who selected them? Not that I'm suggesting that people are biased, but that may help take any dispute out of the equation...
Re: AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
People PM HB their picks, he creates the threads, problem solved.
Re: AOTW - H2H Week 2 - BURIAL - "UNTRUE"
Crow your choice sucked. Grow up. I can assure you if I had liked it I would have said so.
