Best albums of 2016
Best albums of 2016
I'm just in the process of getting the poll together for the 2016 best albums, and I know there have been a few posts here and there with some lists/suggestions. Here's a thread where you can post your favorite albums (but by no means restricted to 10) and get some ideas for a few albums you may have missed.
I'll post my shortlist soon!
The official poll can be found here (only votes using the poll will be counted, so don't assume posting here will be)

Damn it. I just realized I did a terrible job of listening to new albums this year.

I imagine Revocation is one of those in the "5 or so" albums?

Re: Best albums of 2016
After the top 4, it was pretty much a toss up so I essentially ordered them by the sheer 'on repeat' nature of, or number of quality listens they received. I feel like I've listened to less new music (and music in general) than any other year since I can remember:
BLACK STAR - DAVID BOWIE
GOLD - WHORES.
THE IMPOSSIBLE KID - AESOP ROCK
POST PLAGUE - ODONIS ODONIS
DISSOCIATION - DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN
GUIDANCE - RUSSIAN CIRCLES
GORE - DEFTONES
THE VIOLENT SLEEP OF REASON - MESHUGGAH
THE BONES OF A DYING WORLD - IF THESE TREES COULD TALK
THE CURSE THAT IS - GRAVES AT SEA
Others I considered or are definitely worth a listen:
Multicult - Position Remote (just found this band this year and like their previous releases, too)
Zeal & Ardor - (very rarely do you hear so many genres intermingled cohesively ... the EP-like length of this release is the only thing keeping it off the list)
Inter Arma - Paradise Gallows (another fine offering from these guys)
Truckfighters - V (really never got enough listens just due to the number of quality records that hit at the same time
Seven Sisters of Sleep - Ezekial's Hag (haven't listened to it in month's but specifically remember it standing out at the start of the year)
Red Fang - Only Ghosts (Best release since their first record from my point of view)
Beast Wars - The Death of All Things (Another solid release, but I think I like the previous efforts a touch more)
Mammifer - The World Unseen (very pretty tunes here)
Merchant - Suzerian (Pretty solid Melbourne Doom-ish-ness ... Vox could use some variation, but decent stuff)
Lord Mantis - Nice Teeth Whore (only an EP, but their last full length made my list, so it's worth a listen unless you're Kittaan)
Disposessed - Insurgency (Aboriginal metal band with a harsh message)
Oathbreaker - Rheia (not nearly my favorite band, but if you dig deafheaven and similar bands, you'll probably like this)
Youth Code - Commitment to Complications (electronic music almost directly influenced by classic elctro-industrial bands everyone knows well)
Sumac - What One Becomes (Better than the first release but nowhere near as good as OMG or Isis, so still kinda meh)
Ulver - atgclvlsscap (Haven't listened to it in a bit, but I recall liking quite a few tracks on this record)
Disappointing Records I was looking forward to:
Gojira - Magma (barely even listened to it ... seemed like they dumbed down their writing and became too formulaic compared to their other offering)
Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool (what a fucking snooze fest ... I'm still bored of it and I haven't listened to it in months)
Nails - You Will Never Be One of Us (probably in the top 3 records I wanted to hear this year and it has it's moments, but seems overly forced in several parts)
BLACK STAR - DAVID BOWIE

Re: Best albums of 2016
Thanks man. I actually made a mistake by not including the new De La Soul in my Top 10. It was a good year in music when I have 20 albums that could make my top 10 list.

Re: Best albums of 2016
While the top 10 was pretty predictable for the most part (though I didn't expect Cult of Luna to rate so highly) I was a little surprised that the Tribe Called Quest album didn't even get a single vote. It was a great album, and will most likely make my top 10. Maybe it's a little too edgy for all you Trump voters?

best album of the year. period.

Re: Best albums of 2016
Was also a little surprised how few votes the Red Fang album got. Despite being mostly more of the same it was a pretty good album. I'm guessing it got lost in the flurry of releases in Oct/Nov 2016?
